La Grande doctor arrested in connection to Aug. 15 Glass Hill cattle killing

A La Grande doctor was charged with seven counts of aggravated animal abuse and first-degree criminal mischief in connection with cattle shootings earlier this month.

Joel D. Rice, 57, was arrested Thursday night following a two-week investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office into the shooting of seven cows on Glass Hill Road on Aug. 15.

Six cows died as a result, according to police.

Police say the dead cattle were discovered on Rice’s property.

Capt. Craig Ward with the sheriff’s office said on the day of the incident, Rice came home and the cattle were blocking his
driveway.

“He was pretty upset about that,” Ward said.

The cows were shot with a rifle, police said.

I’d like to hear the whole story, but by the sounds of it Rice wanted everything around him to change to suit his preferences and when he didn’t get his own way - Blam.

I bet the ranchers were needling him, too. Note the cattle all came from different owners. Juck him if he can't take a foke.

I’ve never known a cattleman who would do something like this. Cows are too valuable.

Some thoughts:

If you don’t like cattle, don’t moove (get it?) where they are.

He should have put up a fence.

If nearby ranchers were putting cattle on his land on purpose to needle him, they lose any right to gripe when he offs said cattle.

Glass Hill Road is in the sticks, far from the town of La Grande. LG has it’s own PD and this was handled by the Sheriff’s Dept.

It looks like this guy moved into cattle country and caused a stink and doubt he bought a place built on a lot, usually places out like that have some acreage.

Cattle is the generic term. This being apparently a beef cattle range, it is probable some of the “cows” were actually steers or calves. Bulls are possible, but not very likely.

Point taken. Nevertheless, I stand by my original contention that had a tame, neutered, docile pit bull (or breed the press generically lumps in that category) accidentally strayed onto somebody’s property, there are a contingent of FReepers who would rabidly defend the person that shot it.

Agreed. I think both sides of the pit bull debate are nuts.

The breed(s) as a a sub-species are not inherently dangerous, but they are statistically MUCH more likely to cause serious injury or death than some other breeds.

IOW, breed profiling works as a way of making logical decisions about risk, just as it does with human races/subspecies. You just have to remember it is a statistical average issue, and tells you absolutely nothing about the risk posed by any given individual dog or person.

A lot of ranchers in this area don’t keep bulls anymore, most of them use AI because it’s easier than keeping bulls.

LOL, HOO BOOIE,

Hey, Yo! Joe, Settle down baby!

I have no clue who in hell Kelly Ducote is! If you say she’s a dingbat, I’ll believe you before I believe her. After all you are a FRiend.

Now, I know what you mean about the bozos who want to shoot any pitbull on sight. And yeah, they are all just big belchers of fartgas for the most part. I’m sure that given the chance, most of them COULD NOT squeeze that trigger.

But, as you know, talk is cheap.

But lets get back to the cows in the driveway. I have NEVER in my LIFE seen more than ONE bull wandering around loose. Two bulls within the same 5 acres is a fight, and one to behold! I’d be out there taking pictures, to be sure.

Bulls just DON’T do that. SOOO, I have to assume that they were in fact COWS.

And you are way correct in being more worried about a pissed off bull than any pack of dogs. A small, half ton bull in “must” is a thing to be reckoned with. And post haste if one wants to stay alive.

And I agree also, surreptitiously poisoning animals that you happen to dislike, is the sign of a yuppie who can’t stomach the thought of squeezing the trigger.

If and when I have a problem, I still subscribe to the age old, tried and true, 3-S principle.

OTH Joe, you have to admit, shooting 7 cows is a bit of overkill.

He’s a closed range guy, he just got a hard on for the neighbor’s cows.

What a waste of a resource.

Have a good weekend and do me a big favor, go plant some flags on Vets graves in your local cemetery.

God Bless.

“The cattle were blocking his driveway.”

Probably because he wouldn’t prescribe them any mooed-altering drugs.

"I have no clue who in hell Kelly Ducote is!

She's the author of the article. I simply pointed out that I'm always skeptical of any news reporter getting the facts right. For most reporters, all firearms are "AK-47s", and most dog attacks are by "pit bulls." Why wouldn't all cattle be, "cows"?

I absolutely concur that shooting seven "cows" is overkill. So is killing one dog that has done nothing more than stray onto somebody else's property. I was merely equating the two scenarios :-)

Makes me want to know the rest of the story.

The rest of the story?

OK, this is what really happened.

Heh heh heh,

That’s pretty good but that Doc is the one that’s going to need those mooed-altering drugs when he walks out of that courtroom, hopefully anyway. :-)

Hey, Joe, (shux, I just wrote that and Jimi Hendrix popped into my head)

I understand your point. I too just don’t think people need to go around killing dogs they don’t know.

Me? I like to lure them in and if they are good doggies, (98% are good doggies) collar or no, I have a lot of friends who will take them in, no questions asked.

Your dog gets out without a tag? Boo on you. It isn’t the dog’s fault. Maybe the dog needs someone who really cares.

Have a really good weekend.
