Endurance swimmer Diana Nyad became the first person to swim the treacherous waters from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage on Monday, arriving in Key West two days after starting her 110-mile trek.
Nyad, 64, unsuccessfully tried to swim the Florida Strait four times, mostly recently in 2012. The New York City natives latest journey began Saturday morning when she jumped from the seawall of the Hemingway Marina into the warm waters off Havana. As she closed in on the Key West shores, a couple of hundred people gathered on the beach to watch her make the final leg of the swim.
"I am about to swim my last 2 miles in the ocean," Nyad told her 35-member team from the water, according to her website. "This is a lifelong dream of mine and I'm very, very glad to be with you."

Just wow.
Congratulations, and a genuinely impressive feat of athletic prowess.
I hope I’ll be in such good shape 20 years hence.
Good luck and God bless you! 64 doesn’t look quite as old as it did when I was a kid!
Nomen est Omen
Thats one toughLesbian congrates to her
I wonder how many desperate Cubans will think now that they can do it also... after all, they have all the motivation they may need, don’t they?
Sadly, they would be leaving an old communist regime for a new communist regime.
Wow-— kudos to Diana. Does she actually swim the whole time without a break? If so, that’s really amazing.
> I wonder how many desperate Cubans will think now that they can do it also... after all, they have all the motivation they may need, dont they?
I don’t think the U.S. is the place to be quite so much anymore. 0 took care of that...
“””Nyad is also an author of three books, a motivational speaker and has been a reporter and commentator for NPR.”””
Yup, lesbian.
This is getting all the media buildup and attention because Nyad is a vocal lesbian, not because she is the first person (or first woman) to swim from Cuba to Florida. Australian Susie Maroney successfully swam the strait in 1997. Yes, she did so with a shark cage, and so-called experts say it gave her an advantage. But that's all B.S. Nyad has made a career talking about her “immoral, lowlife” father and the all-too-familiar claim of female celebs that she was sexually abused (by her swimming coach). Nyad is one confused human being. From a recent interview:
“[A]t 21, she had taken a bus from New York City to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a friends surprise birthday party. ‘They didnt tell me they were all gay,’ she says. ‘They thought, She wont care, shell just get here and deal.’ She had sex with three women that night.
’I stayed for two weeks and went out every night and slept with everybody in the town.’ Before that, she says, ‘I was just so messed up. I didnt have any sexuality — I just knew I didnt want to be with men. But I thought it was all just because of the trauma — you never know, but I think I was gay from day one.’”
She considers having sex with every lesbian in Ann Arbor “normal,” which means that, to her, being heterosexual or celibate must be “abnormal.”
Wait for the media reports trumpeting her as a great role model for young women and girls. Inevitable, and disgusting.
Congratulations but, please, no pictures.
Congratulations!
I have a question about an earlier swim, cited in this article:
“Four years later, Nyad swam the 102 miles from North Bimini, Bahamas, to Juno Beach, Fla., in 27.5 hours.
Uh....my calculator tells me that’s 3.7 mph.....????????
Currents?
eyep
Good for her...
Im 64...
Its not amazing what we can do...
we need to celebrate our good health at this age after living a life of little or no unhealthy pastimes etc...
Whats so great about being sick ???
Meanwhile, honorable people get paralyzed at 18.
LOL! Sounds like something I would of done at that age. I once jumped off the high diving board at the Eden Roc hotel while a hurricane approached the coast with winds gusting at about 60 mph. Yea I had a few beers in me. Quite exhilarating though. Somehow I made it out of those crazy years alive.
