Your ISP should have a free AV program for you to download. They’re good. I used to swear by Norton but I’ve had it blow up every computer I’ve ever tried to upgrade Norton on. It was infuriating.

After many years, the free software finally failed me at my wifes hands . .
I recommend you purchase the ESET NOD32 ... No problems going into my 3rd year.

I use the paid version of Malwarebytes along with free Zonealarm and Microsoft security essentials.
No anti-virus junk that eats up your power.

If you are using Windows 7 or 8, try Microsoft Essentials. It is free and seems to work flawlessly with Windows.

Uplug it?
In all seriousness, keeping your system up to date and running a hardware firewall, and if using Windows then running Windows Security Essentials. It comes with Windows Defender and does a far better job than add-ons like Norton. If buying a hardware firewall (About $65) is not an option the use the Windows Firewall that comes with windows.

If you are using Windows 7 or 8, try Microsoft Essentials. Bump on that.
Have been using Windows Essentials for 2 years, XP Pro machine and Win 7 machine.
Run Malwarebytes and Kaspersky tdsskiller once a month to make double sure.
Microsoft Essentials hasn't let anything through yet.
Works slick and doesn't eat up processor time.
Had McAfee before, just became too much bloatware for the older machine, would almost drag it to a stop.

I started Ms Essentials when I got a Win7 laptop and desktop.
Previously on the XP, I had used Norton, Trend Micro, McAfee, AVG, and AVAST!. They all eventually became bloatware, would slow my system, would conflict with other software, etc.
I do occasionally scan with SUPERAnti-Spyware, and clean the registry with CCleaner and Glary Utilities.

That’s exactly what I use on all my Win 7s and XPs.
