James Best, Truly the BEST of Hollywood

Mention the name James Best, and the first Best character that comes to most people’s mind is Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane on the long-running hit TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard".

But there is much more to know about this still active 87-year-young actor, accomplished artist, author, college professor, and songwriting guitarist.

It was a small part but he was in The Caine Mutiny with Humphrey Bogart, Fred MacMurray, Van Johnson, EG Marshall, Jose Ferrer.

james Best spent a number of years in my namesake county as an acting coach and talent consultant after Dukes. Good to see he is still going strong.

And I didn’t know he was cousins with the Everly Brothers.

That's right. He played Ens/LtJG Commady, I think.

Saw him a few months ago. He seemed to be doing great. Talked with him a bit about “The Killer Shrews.” Always loved that film. It’s schlocky, but very endearing.

Best’s filmography is massive. He made an appearance in just about every episodic tv-series back in the late-50s and 1960s.
