I am going to dumping my old copper land line. I have looked at magic jack. This new one from Walmart looks good or better

it’s only 29$ for one year, cheaper for a five year plan.
BUT, you need fast internet to make it worth it.
I’ve got majic jack. The initial purchase is $50 plus $20 for six months service. After that you can pay for 5 years and that comes to the $19.95 a year they talk about. It’s not that much more to pay year by year.
I wish I could get internet only and no cable.
Only problem is that if you don’t have a land line, you can’t make a call if the power goes out. But if you save big bucks, that may be worth putting up with.
So we got Ooma, which is like Magic Jack. If the power does go out again we'll go to the library or Starbucks to power up our cell phones. No use paying through the nose for a land line when we can just hook it up to our Internet.
We can’t make a call when the power goes out with Verizon phone service. It’s all through the digital cable.
We use our cell phones for backup, in the event of a power outage. The Ooma is our land line. With the Ooma, we get free long distance, and can talk as long as we want. We just have the cheapest basic plans on our cells.
I have Magic Jack. Like it fine except I cannot call my sister on it. I always get a message saying I need to call Magic Jack to pay for a conference call! The only thing I can figure out is she lives in a little town with probably the last surviving private phone company in the US! So I always have to call her on my cell. That’s my only complaint about Magic Jack.
Time Warner Cable will let you drop your television service, while just keeping your internet service. We're making the transition to internet streaming television this week. Gonna save about $60 a month.
Have Magic Jack for a few years, for $19 a year? It’s mainly used to intercept BS calls from phone scammers and solicitors. It’s dormant most of the time, but it records the messages and sends them to your email so you can screen them. I use it to put on the purchase orders over the internet. I rarely get calls on it, which is a good thing.
I’ve used both Ooma and Magicjack. Ooma is head and shoulders above Magicjack.
The features are awesome, price is great, and call quality is excellent.
I dropped cable a few weeks ago. I had AT&T and still use them for Internet. It takes getting used to, but I can’t afford to pay all that money for nothing! With all those channels, there were only two new shows I watched. Everything else was reruns and I can watch them (and Longmire and Major Crimes) online for free!
It's cheap... it has great options for forwarding, simul-ring, and so on... and those things can all be done via the web. You don't need a computer to use the service.
Last year I took the box and a cheapo phone with me to Costa Rica for a month, and had my two lines in my hotel room as if I was back home.
Not sure why, he just dumped them for the local carrier and didn't bother to do any checking. Now, he's a little leery of "Wal Mart Specials".
Your cell phone is your backup in a power outage. Plus if using a laptop, a desktop battery backup unit will keep the modem, telephony device and laptop powered for a long time. At least an 1-3 hours I would guess.
Laptop battery would also be supplying juice
That was also part of our reasoning for dumping cable. We were only watching about 5% of the available programming, but paying for 100% of it. Didn't make sense from a consumer standpoint.
Someone posted a chart here recently which showed how much subscribers pay for each of about 150 different channels. Most are less than .10¢ a month, but still.....why am I paying anything at all for MSNBC, or Spanish language channels?
I've had the Roku box hooked up to one of our TVs for a couple of days now. It streams programming through our internet modem. Right now I'm only subscribed to Netflix, but I might add Hulu or Amazon Prime to get more programming.
It takes a little getting used to. It's more like watching videos on YouTube than watching broadcast TV, but I sure do like the fact that there are no commercials. Did you know that's how cable TV started out in the 70s?
As long as you’re at WalMart, why not just get StraightTalk? You buy the cellphone you prefer, and service is just $45 a month for unlimited everything. Uses major cellphone networks, depending on your location; you refill time online or on the phone. I notice absolutely no difference from AT&T, and it’s wayyyyyyy cheaper!

If you break your ooma device or it stops working then what will you do? Does ooma replace a device that fails, just poops out?
So you pay $149 up front forooma then you pay nothing except each month taxes you pay on a copper land line too. For me this would be about $3.50 a month.
I see ooma units on ebay lower than $149.
