Hoard of Pigs Go Hog Wild in San Ramon
NBC Bay Area ^ | Wednesday, Sep 11, 2013 | Lisa Fernandez and Jodi Hernandez

It's no joke, but a hoard of wild pigs has gone hog wild in suburban San Ramon.

Over the last few months as many as 20 of the nocturnal beasts (at least, that's how one neighbor remembers it) have ripped up grass and turned over gardens - all in the hot pursuit of grub. When homeowners in the Henry Ranch neighborhood have woken up, they've been shocked to find their manicured lawns all askew.

"It looks like a tornado has hopped from yard to yard," Carrie Spurlock said. "We've tried to deter them, but they keep coming back."

And it's not just Spurlock's lawn that has been wrecked.

A recent visit to the neighborhood by NBC Bay Area on Wednesday revealed a dozen or so front lawns looking like they had been professionally Rototilled -- and left a mess -- by the rotund mammals destroying property in a neighborhood where home prices start at more than half a million dollars.

Neighbors have been frustrated with trying to get rid of the pigs. They've used pesticides to kill insects, which the pigs like to dine on. They've installed motion-sensored lights hoping that would keep the animals away. They said they've called the Dept. of Fish and Game, but haven't gotten the runaround. And they've called a trapper, who initially set up cages, but has since taken them down.

All to no avail.

For now, neighbors are left to replant their grass and smooth out their bumpy lawns.

"We're very aggravated," Spurlock said. "They might even be a danger to people."

Just one of the many reasons wild pigs are legal to hunt in CA, one pig per day is the limit, the season, I believe, is year round. I can’t get out and walk like I used to so don’t keep up with the hunting laws the way I used to, but I am sure hog season is year round. Used to be one a day one in possession but I believe you can have unlimited in possession now. They just keep multiplying, like our imported wild turkeys.

The wild pig population is growing in San Diego County. They do a lot of damage to native vegetation and native species. There should be unlimited hunting of them. I hear that it is not easy to shoot them.

Get a bow.

Pigs multiply rapidly, and you have to kill lots of them to keep their numbers in control.

Check out this white paper (top of page 3 has the stat I’m referencing): http://www.oregon.gov/OISC/docs/pdf/swine_ra.pdf

As well as this:

“They said they’ve called the Dept. of Fish and Game, but haven’t gotten the runaround.”

I’m not even going to say it.

"It looks like a tornado has hopped from yard to yard," Carrie Spurlock said. "We've tried to deter them, but they keep coming back."

Why don't you EAT them Carrie. Oh, that's right, you hate guns and hunters. Bad, very bad. Relocate them, or spay and neuter them (they've actually tried both).

I had a minor pig problem for a while. They were after acorns (which I don't mind them eating, but I don't want them tearing up the place). Eventually, I called Fish & Game and got a depredation permit. Then I built a trap (at a cost of nearly a grand). I was about to start baiting them with soured corn so that I could get the whole family in there when I tried something simpler and a bit more creative.

Pigs don't see very well. They tend to travel a scent by night. So I found their trail, cut down a tree, and spread the branches across the trail along its length.

The pigs came in, got their feet tangled up, got frustrated and confused, turned around, and went back whence they came.

Oh, for cryin’ out loud, just shoot them already and have the neighbors over for a pig pickin’!

That's funny. A "hoard" of Hogs went Hog Wild in DC today, and scared off 999,979 muslims.

Big man, pig man
Ha ha, charade you are
You well-heeled big wheel
Ha ha, charade you are
And when your hand is on your heart
You’re nearly a good laugh
Almost a joker
With your head down in the pig bin
Sayin’ “keep on diggin’”
Pig stain on your fat chin
What do you hope to find
Down in the pig mine
You’re nearly a laugh
You’re nearly a laugh
But you’re really a cry...
