It's a sad celebrity ritual. Tragedy strikes somewhere in the U.S., and a star uses Twitter to politicize it for their pet cause.

Henry Winkler of Happy Days fame joined the club earlier today.

The actor rushed to Twitter today after news broke that a shooting at the U.S. Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. left several people dead. Many details are still unknown, but that didn't prevent Winkler from assuming gun control would have prevented the shooting.

If he had been around in 1902 he would have been calling for a ban on the 1894 Winchester because Harry Tracy used one to kill 11 police officers in his break from prison.

But how is this possible? D.C. already has strict gun control laws.

How do we prevent someone from violating existing gun control laws and shooting victims who are unarmed because of the same gun control law? Clearly we need to pass some more gun control laws!

This incident PROVES ONCE AGAIN that the police can not protect the average citizen - at work, at the shopping mall, in church or at school.

Your only defense is yourself and anything you have at hand.

Arm yourself and your loved ones if you truly care.

Hopefully, the NRA will offer free gun ownership and safety classes to all Navy Yard employees.
