I haven’t seen that done every time-my daughter and I both gave the free liquor but I’ve seen it done without, too.

I’ve always wondered where the custom came from in the first place-it seems common to most cultures...

MrT5 said he’d been to a couple of weddings of people from islands where it was the custom for the groom to kidnap/carry off the bride, her family to chase after, and his family and hers get into a drunken brawl, and call it great fun-it sounded more like a plot to a mindless comedy to me...

The shot of whiskey or peach schnapps ( for girls) is integral to the occasion

I have heard of, but not seen, where the groom has had to fight through a protective layer of relatives in order to claim his bride.

The problem with the Am church is that they NEVER preach against sin....who wants to offend those Catholics in the pews and cut off the money. We end up with a watered-down church full of happy slappy sinners.

I’d heard that some people in rural Wales, Scotland, etc still make the pretend carrying off of the bride at the reception part of the fun, too-supposedly an acting-out of an old custom. Still sounds like an excuse for a drunken melee to me...

One of the weddings MrT5 attended was that of a fellow service member-groom and bride were both Islanders. He said the mock abduction and resulting brawl ended in some bruises and black eyes and pretty much wrecked the banquet room at the officers’ club that the reception was held in, but the couple paid for the damage with a shrug and a smile.

The priest at my church doesn’t seem to care if he offends anyone or not, but he serves two very small, conservative communities.

Thanks : ) bc the affianced is not Catholic (Lutheran) she will have to fill out a form called a dispensation basically asking the diocese of Washington to let her marry a noncatholic. The woman at holy rosary said theyre routinely granted. I said we were still praying for conversion and she said its better if he comes to that on his own rather than just doing it to please her.

Ti GETS IT, Hobbes does not. That’s it in a nutshell. Go ahead fill the pews to the max. They will be fed social justice ad infinitum and applaud for more. We are talking about Obama voters here. Do you really think they are going to hear Gods word on sin when they’re plied with social justice. To take you analogy of school kids— are kids going to eat up the broccoli on the plate when the priest is serving social justice brownies?

Here is tomorrow's bulletin. Read Father DeCelles on the VA governors race where he draws distinctions between the two CATHOLIC gubernatorial candidates in VA. Hobbes Terry McAulluffe Catholics are loaded up in lib parish pews eating social justice brownies.

Wait...thats an interesting statement.....

Your last several posts, were very general, declaring everything to be Amchurch.

Now, you are talking about Lib Parishes. Seeming to imply a subset.

Now, yours isn’t, St.Phils where I go now isnt. Its clearly mot St.Anthony of Padua the TLM, but its prettyconservative.

So which is it?

Thank you for that-I suppose the brownies are just something to make those who buy into them feel as though they are doing something “right” by promoting social justice-I don’t think they really believe it, but having confirmation of it by the priest, who won’t call sin what it is relieves their guilt for not personally assisting those in REAL need. I believe social justice is just plain theft, and it deprives those in real need of charitable assistance.

They are just selfish, probably well-off dilettantes CINOs. If something was a sin 30 years ago, unless God appeared to the Pope and told him it no longer was, it is still a sin as far as I’m concerned...

I hate to be so uncharitable, but I’m more appalled each day at most of this disgusting society that punishes the honest and rewards anything else. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I’ll stick to the Catholic way I was taught by church and family as a child. Part of my bad mood is the fact that I’m reading that book, and the similarities just make my blood boil hotter ...

SJ is legitimate, but its become disproportionate.

See the writing about Zacchaeus.

Thats where XS is correct, that it is disproportionate among SOME parishes.

But my point is, thats a management issue. And The Pope a tually mentioned that.

There are 3 churches close to me, one TLM, and 2 Amchurches. All affiliated with the Diocese.

2 conservative., 1, Slap happy.

The churches-5 of them within 40 miles in any direction here are very conservative, but that is likely due to the fact that three of them are in rural areas with very few people, and the other two are in a town of about 20,000. When we lived in the city, we changed churches because we didn’t like the way the priest preached a democratic party line.

I’ve never said mine wasn’t. Every parish around here other than fr decelles at st Raymond penafort, is more or less lib. St James, our lady of good counsel etc. lib more often than not. The AMchurch IS lib. Did you hear what neo said ? They have to drive to find one. Tioga is surrounded by them. Majority of parishes are by and large lib
