Ian Fleming 'was sexist, racist and sadistic': New Bond author says his book is well-written... unlike the originals

The author of the new James Bond book, says he deliberately wrote about women and African people 'not in a way Fleming would write them'.

William Boyd, the third writer in recent years to pen a new installment to the classic spy series, said he found it difficult to read the descriptions of 'negros' and chapters entitled 'Nigger Heaven'.

Boyd, who was born in Ghana in 1952 and spent his childhood travelling between Africa and his Scottish boarding school Gordonstoun, said: 'It's unbelievable to read now. I think if you were of that privileged upper class, born at the beginning of the 20th century, you were probably racist, sexist, right wing and anti-Semitic.'

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Fleming was wildly successful, and this author is using that success for his own book, yet insulting the very books Fleming wrote. Ingratitude, they name is liberal.

Guess I know which author I will be avoiding. Had all of the originals at one time.

Well, I guess Bond has been neutered even more

I never knew Bond as racist. And, yes, he was already quite “diverse” with his women in Live and Let Die

There is Fleming and everyone else. The inspiration to create Bond was a reaction to the treason of the Cambridge spies (Philby, Burgess, Maclean, Blunt et al) for the soviets. The upper class Cambridge spies shook Britain when they were exposed and made headlines in 1951. Casino Royale was published in 1953 and Bond was fighting the soviets in that book. He was definitely anti soviet at his origin.

Excellent!

All the things that made Bond likeable are being disrespected by this wannabe ‘author’.

I think that while heirs have a right to the estate, their should be some restrictions on the ability to use the artistic creations of people, certainly without their express creation by the artist of an entity that controls those creations. Otherwise, it is just a fraud on the public.

We would not allow someone to be out there creating new paintings and calling them Van Goghs. This guy should be free to write his book, just not use Bond as his character unless Ian Fleming wanted this to happen. If Fleming created this publishing entity, and authorized it to write Bond books before he died, well, I guess that's ok, but there should always be a requirement that the work be labeled to avoid confusion. "Bond, as imagined by Joe Blow" prominent on the cover, and "Not written by Ian Fleming" on the back.

The Cold War is over, and so the entire idea of a recherche thug being one of the good guys is uncomfortable for the PC mindset.

If the author wanted to capture the spirit of Bond, his hero would be shooting Muslim terrorists. In the back. And it would be a good thing.

Not really surprising, is it? Whatever your political or ideological affiliation, if you were one of Fleming's peers or contemporaries you probably didn't have views that would be regarded as politically correct nowadays. Future generations will probably find fault with today's trendy, well-to-do Britons like Boyd for some reason that may not be clear to us now.

It all does seem like "poor form," though. Taking the Bond job is something like an admission that a writer hasn't made it as a highbrow author -- that you're only at best a middlebrow and not a very creative or original one. Tacking your name onto Fleming's and Bond's for the money is bad enough, but angling for extra publicity by running down the franchise and its creator is definitely base and boorish.

What a horrible way to start.
Announce your "political Correctness," and be assured I will never read anything you write, moron!

And just for grins, I must add the obvious. YOU don't get to judge whether your writing is 'better.' Your readers do.
Maybe you need some time at a "Delusional' clinic.

Iceberg Slim’s book Pimp was written in the 1960s and isn’t very PC either in terms of race, sexism, homosexuality, etc. Yet there has been a recent documentary about the author (an ex-con pimp) and talk of a filmed version.

JFK was a fan of Ian Fleming’s books. Perhaps scholars need to put that in their PC pipe and smoke it.

Don’t forget the British Soviet traitors in the 1960s with the Profumo affair.

A license to kill does not require Mirandizing the target.

And you wonder why i don’t read Bond books anymore.
Sticking with Daniel Silva and Vince Flynn at least they deal with reality.
If Bond movies become PC,will never watch another one..
