American TV drama series Mad Men has triggered a dramatic boom in the sales of Lucky Strike cigarettes, causing outrage among anti-smoking campaigners.
Sales of the world-famous cigarettes, owned by British American Tobacco, reached 33 billion packs last year compared to 23 billion in 2007 when the show first aired.
Mad Men features New York ad agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce in the 1960s and their turbulent relationship with iconic cigs brand Lucky Strike.

I didn’t know that Lucky Strikes came available with filter.
Dad used to smoke KOOL cigarettes. I remember when there was a small cartoon strip on the back with the penguin.
He gave us one to smoke when I was about 4 or 5.
I saw some 1960s movie (THE VICTORS) in which some girl pulls a pack of cigarettes out of her purse. They were LUCKY STRIKES.
I didn’t either!
I don’t know how people smoke unfiltered cigs. My grandpa smoked Camels and was always spitting out bits of tobacco.
I guess it was considered “unmanly” to smoke filtered cigs until the 1960s.

The ‘trick’ is/was to pack them before opening the pack. Also, before lighting them rap them on the lighter - a lot easier with a Zippo than with matches or those round(ish) bics.
I personally ‘justified’ the non filters as reasoning a filter drew all the ‘bad stuff’ to the filter and increased the chance of lip and tongue cancer?
Also the filters somewhat brought about the end to getting the end of the cigarettes wet.
There was a name for it but I can’t recall it right away.
(YES, I can, I got in trouble here a while back for inferring to or insinuating a phrase or so....<: <: <:)
I read years ago that the word “lucky” could not be mentioned on the I Love Lucy show because their sponsor was a different cigarette company and they didn’t want people to think of Lucky Strikes. No idea if it’s true or not, but whenever I watch Lucy I find myself listening for the word “lucky,” and I haven’t heard it so far.
