The company that owns Penthouse magazine and a host of online dating and adult websites filed for bankruptcy protection Tuesday.
FriendFinder Networks Inc.'s move comes as many in the adult entertainment industry struggle because of an increase in free online options.
The Boca Raton, Fla., company said bankruptcy was "the most efficient and cost effective way for the company
to continue to operate our business."

Knowledge should be shared, and free.
Open Source wins again!
So newspaper classifieds weren’t the only thing Craigslist wiped out....
>>Too much free stuff on the internet is blamed. I shed no tears. <<
We for-profit pornographers need to stick together, damnit...
I’ll be with you through thick and thin!
Will obama intervene and give it to the unions?
Nope. They're not muzzies or Iranians, and didn't contribute enough.
This is a case where two wrongs make a right.
I never believed it would happen to me, but there I was...
Craigslist rid itself of open sex ads about a year or two ago. So Backpage and others took up the mantle. If people want something, someone is going to provide it.
LOL I’ve bought and sold quite a few cars and parts on CL, but never ventured to the dark side.
Hard to shed any tears for the pornography business. But part of what’s going on is that regular everyday girls are putting themselves on the internet. To me, that’s part of the moral meltdown we see nowadays. Girls with no moral foundation, because of the times we lives in, and their boyfriends, see nothing wrong with making internet pornography.
There is a certain irony. Penthouse and Playboy fought to change the culture from a nation of prudes to a nation of libertines. But in doing that, people lost their inhibitions, and now post videos of themselves online for free. Now Playboy and Penthouse can't charge for what others are giving away. In the end, they were dependent on the prudishness they opposed.
You hit the nail on the head.
These pornographers such as Hefner, were so successful at lowering inhibitions and morals, that now we see young girls wanting to be a porn star, and nobody in their lives disapproves.
Let me tell you what "efficient and cost effective" mean. They mean screwing other honest businesses out of what they are rightfully owed. If you can't run a business without stealing from your vendors, you ought to be shut down.
There is NOTHING "efficient and cost effective" about cheating people. I had a wholesale business in FL in the 80s and I got cheated by these bastards using bankruptcy protection. I could write chapters on the BS scam it is. Effin' joke.
And I'm not making an editorial comment about the business these people are in, the real point is that corporate bankruptcy in this country is legalized theft.
It is absolutely amazing how much porn there is on the Internet. You wonder, who are all those people? It seems like tens of thousands.
At one time, I remember reading that porn was the only profitable internet endeavor.
I think that’s changed now that there is so much embedded advertising.
