11 Geniusly Ghetto Car Repairs

"There's a difference between a ghetto car repair and a geniusly ghetto car repair.

With a ghetto car repair, there's no passion, no creativity. It's like using duct tape to reattach a bumper or putting saran wrap over a broken window.

A geniusly ghetto car repair is different. It's an artistic approach to avoiding paying for a car repair or upgrade. It's finding a solution to an automotive problem using stuff from around the house. The results aren't elegant but they're clever. It's MacGyver meets Rube Goldberg meets People of Walmart.

I picked 11 of my favorite photos that fall under the geniusly ghetto auto repair umbrella. Definitely do try these at home... 1.Front headlight. Wiper blades. Manual lock. Air conditioner Heater....."

Don't knock the window air conditioner. Even billionaires want that.

I have used a beer can to patch a hole in my exhaust myself.

Ha! My dad did that when they traded in our 1957 Ford station wagon, except he used a coffee can, I think. Anyway, when the salesman fired up and raced the engine, he was keeping his fingers crossed that it held (it did) and we ended up with a new station wagon. :-)

When I was a kid and the wheel wells of my ‘71 Ventura rusted through, I mixed up a batch of paper mache and dumped it down either fender from inside the trunk. After it hardened I then hit the outside with some spray undercoating.

I took it for my Pennsylvania State Inspection and sat there smiling as about a dozen mechanics all gathered around, poking at my wheel wells. They could not figure out what I had done. It passed though.

Meh. I’ve seen all of those before. And I’ve done some of them.

“I know a guy that actually wanted to do the heater/fireplace thing in an old econoline van.”

I once placed a Coleman catalytic heater in my 1968 VW van during a very cold winter. It turned over and caught the shag carpet (yes I know, shag carpet) on fire. It was an interesting few minutes of my life. I learned a valuable lesson.

Having owned 3 VW Vans, I can feel your pain (even if you cannot feel your toes in winter)

Had a 1971 Ford F-100 with the floorboards rusted out, the fix... when you lifted up the floor mats you saw STOP.

Well, they do get warmer when the engine catches on fire.
