The continuing saga of Mama Bear and her three Cubs as This scene greeted me Thursday morning. They destroyed 2 sacks of Rice Hulls, 2 Chicken Manure and 2 of 4 bags of Steer Manure. I was able to reclaim most of it and put it in secure? containers…

Hi Gardening Friends, I hope y’all don’t mind a little non-gardening vanity post? I thought I would let y’all in on a little good news affecting Mrs. Red Devil and me. Many of you know we moved from Marshall, Tx back to our home in Meridian, Ms around the first of July. Mrs. RD has worked at WalMart for a little over ten years and had applied for an open position at a Walmart in Meridian that would bring us back to our Home in Meridian. Her request for a transfer was approved. We made the move (at our expense), which really put us in a bind finically. But we would work through it. I am retired and collecting SS and she has been an assistant manager at WalMart for years.

She was promoted to Store Manager of the WalMart she transferred to this past Monday. This is a big promotion within the WalMart Company. She thinks it may only be temporary and a test of her ability. I am being very positive and optimistic about her promotion! She has been working toward this position for years and finally made her goal. I am very, very proud of her accomplishment!

I hope y’all will wish her success in her new position.

I will be back gardening full tilt this coming Spring and contributing to this thread as much as I can.

Congratulations, RD. That is great news on the promotion. It will be great to have you gardening “at home” and posting here again. Welcome home!

Now that is some great growing! Congratulations to her!

I tried to get you on the original ping, but kept promoting you: I tried reddevil242; red_devil242, and reddevil_242, with the inevitable result of "nobody by that name found".

Oh, my. Over the years, in both Oregon & northern california, we had a few bear visits, with resulting damage. Worst case was when one ran full speed down my brother’s ridge top site, into the back of his chicken yard, and out the front, never slowing down. It never even noticed the chicken wire, but you can bet the chickens noticed it, though...and that the wire was missing.

At least you were able to salvage most of that material.

"Good fences make good neighbors", and that applies to making decent neighbors out of critters, too.

Right now, your kitchen sounds like ours. Then there's the utility room...

The orange ones are the accidental cross of buttercup with pink babana squash: I planted them next to each other last year, then saved seed from one of the buttercups & planted it this year. The white ones are "Bennington's Green Tint" pattypan that I let go to collect seed from...well isolated! The greens, of course, are the buttercups from the vines that didn't produce the orange crosses; but I won't trust their seed, as I know that they are not only most likely crosses, but would have recrossed with the orange ones, which,BTW, have small vestigial 'cup' on the blossom end.

Okay, thank you. We could do [and afford] that.

Happy October! Thanks for thread n ping! All that snow. Brrr. I am back in Ohio after 10 mo in OKC. Stayed with my brother n SIL— to say they aren’t into outdoors n yard work is a huge. Understatement. I did make a gorgeous entry area for their front of home such was previously a weed haven. What a shame to have a gorgeous home n gave the outside so naked

also next to back NEVER USED porch scratched out a small 5 x 10 garde area. I buried compost n worked in peat moss to the plot that was clay with a smattering of the red sand here n there. Did plant potatoes cantelopes tomatoes. Beans. Had herbs in pots. Since I left the first of Sept Ian guessing all is dead. Doubtful they will water n it is hot n dry. I gave the potted herbs to a friend ask knew they would get used n cared for

Always enjoy everyone’s sharing

Hugs!

RD this is wonderful news regarding Mrs RD. congrats. I like Walmart. Hope she has a good experience and not too much resentment over the NEW PERSON getting the nod. Jealousy can make work situations rough

Also nice you were able to swing move back home

Yes, we have had enough rain in central Texas to keep everything green, but nothing to fill the lakes.

I have several volunteer tomato plants that are about three feet tall that I had to stake this week. Lots of blooms on them.

Lettuce and turnip seeds have sprouted and onions are well over three inches tall. Garlic seeds have not come up yet.

Other veggie seedlings are doing very well so far.

Yes, we do need rain, badly, but hopefully it holds off until
after 11 & 12 October. We’ll be golf tournament and bbq here. Then LET IT RAIN, slowly and softly.
My remaining cucumber is full of blooms. I’m looking for some tomatoe plants, just a couple. I’ll drop by bonnie’s place and see what she has. My cabbage are just beautiful.
4 leaves and another one forming. They’ll be going in the syrup pots after the 13th. I’m going to put the peppers in
the syrup pots too.

I'm getting a few sprinkles now. Not enough to run off the roof into the rain barrel, but I'll take it. Hopefully it will increase as the day goes on.

Those walking onions are the best, our patch has been going for about 15-17 years now. If you can let some of them get big - they will be about 1/2 the size of a leek - try them on the grill, just oil them up and salt and pepper them. They are sweet! Also the seed heads will get bigger over time and can be peeled and used like shallots.

Speaking of walking onions. I've recovered enough and they are doing well enough that they should be off to a good start next year.

Wild garlic is up, too.
