Lassie Come Home would be an important movie even if it wasnt about a dog, because it is the first time Elizabeth Taylor appeared in a major Hollywood film. (She previously appeared with Carl Alfalfa Switzer in something called Theres One Born Every Minute in 1942.) Surprisingly, Netflix has Sherlock Holmes Faces Death on DVD, but not Lassie.

Interesting to read the clip with picture about American women and the wars...one of the lines read....”American women...helping the UNITED NATIONS win the war”. Talk about priming the public...

I wish that movies like Lassie were being made today. Animal planet used to run the old Lassie TV shows in the middle of the night, and I would wake up just to view them. here was a modernized Lassie called The New Lassie that had been made, or sponsored, by Little Golden Books (now out of business). It was very well done and probably originally ran on TV about 2-3 years before it was dropped.
The New Lassie was in color and was about a teen-aged boy and his widowed mom who was a veternarian who moved to a new town to set up her business. I don’t know when the series originally ran, but the boy had a cell phone.

Incredible cast in “Lassie, Come Home.” It’s not available on Netflix. I’ll have to try the library.

Thanks for this! My kids got to meet Lassie just last week! Well, a descendant of Lassie, his owner/trainer Bob Weatherwax sold the rights to the name but he’s still a descendant and the kids got a pic with him :) :) It was at Woofstock in Harrisburg, PA...Timmy, aka Jon Provost, was there as well!

There was one made in the late 80’s called “The New Lassie”, and then there was one in the late 90’s that is what I think you are talking about...it may have just been called “Lassie”.

Timmy having a cell phone ruins the whole Lassie premise. When he falls down the well, Lassie doesn’t have to go get help, Timmy just texts his friends.
Lassie is redundant.

Nigel Bruce was masterful in his portrayal of Dr. Watson as a complete dufus. One wonders how me made it through med school.

As I remember, this series had Timmy saving Lassie from crooks. He had to go all the way to Canada to do it.

Whatever it was, I was sorry to see the series dropped. I suppose that it had something to do with a) the star aging out or b) financial problems at Golden Books which ultimately caused it to close down.
I was also sorry to see that it was running on Animal Planet (when I viewed it) at 3 in the morning when few kids could watch it.
To: afraidfortherepublic
I think there was also a discrepancy with them using a Lassie that was not a Weatherwax collie which traced to the original Lassie...but originally it wasn’t airing at 3 AM. I never really watched it, and I know that when Lassie Come Home was remade a few years ago they did not use a Weatherwax collie either.

No, I was watching reruns. I would have steered my elementary school aged grandchildren to watch the series if it had been playing at a decent hour.
Animal Planet also used to run an Australian series at that hour called Skippy. It was about a boy and his pet kangaroo who used to have all kinds of adventures. His single dad was the Bush Ranger.

“His single dad was the Bush Ranger.”
Yeah, I’ll bet he was....
