Protective pit bull scares off coyotes and saves cat friend

Sherree Lewis, who cares for her son's dog, Jack, is crediting the dog with saving the family cat, named "Kitty."

Kitty nearly used up all of her nine lives in one fell swoop when two coyotes decided that she looked like their next meal.

Lewis described the frightening scene:

“ As I was walking to the door, I could see the coyotes over here," “ "One had her by the neck and the other had her by the tail,”

Jack, seeing his feline friend in danger, quickly sprang into action, racing out of the house and after the attacking coyotes.

Jack's quick action prompted the coyotes to drop Kitty and run.

The violent shaking left the cat with brain swelling and a broken tooth, but she is expected to survive.

Considering the source (fake "news" site examinerdotcom") I am waiting for the claim that a cape magically sprang from the dog's collar before it 'saved' the cat, and that it always takes pains to help poor old ladies across the street.

And of course that it is now rescuing stray kittens and the odd duckling or several as time permits.

It’s likely enough. There ARE a lot of pet friendship stories. The dog saw the cat as something it had to protect, and did so. What’s amazing is that animals now often behave more nobly than people do!

Pit bull saves cat from coyote attack

SEMINOLE (FOX 13) - They were brought together by second chances; now Kitty has a third, thanks to Jack.

"He probably feels like he's the caretaker. He checks on her every day and sniffs her, seeing what kind of shape she is in," said Sherree Lewis.

The two are family pets, and both were rescues. Sherree watches over her son Peter's dog while Peter is deployed in Afghanistan. She never imagined Jack would become the family's second hero.

"As I was walking to the door, I could see the coyotes over here," she pointed out.

It happened in an instant at the Seminole neighborhood.

"One had her by the neck and the other had her by the tail," she recalled.

Two coyotes had Kitty and were shaking her violently, but Jack was ready for a fight.

"I didn't know Jack could run that fast. He was on them so fast," she said.

Most dogs I know do not really care all that much for cats, and the most likely explanation is that the dog thought-processes were in reality more like the following:

Coyote smell -same as "SQUIRREL" reaction!

I disagree. We were renting for a year in Springfield MO, while my wife was finishing off her Public Health payback. We rented a place with a couple hundred acres adjacent to our landlord at an adjacent ranch. During the time we had a few adopted friends. Both were just fantastic animals. One was a super mouser and the other a collie. They would greet us daily and were very affectionate. We were obviously adopted by them.

One day a pack of wild dogs came after the cat chasing it towards our house. It was something out of the exorcist to see a ranch collie change from a jolly collie to a possessed beast. Full steam into the pack in a wild attack. We learned why the mess of a coat collies have has certain benefits. The collie drew blood and the pack mouths of fur. When it was over the dogs scattered to the wind and the collie came back with a slightly bloody nose. From wild beast to a jolly collie again. The cat was part of his pack. The cat rubbed the dogs and then took off to do a ranch cat thing.

There was real affection and protection there. I was impressed. The collie got a roast from us that night.

Thank you for that story, I quite appreciate it. I love all animals (except rats -don’t get Me started, please) and always quite enjoy hearing about interspecies carings. Wish I had more stories like that to relate to.
