Lawmakers under fire for $174,000 TAX FREE gift to widow of millionaire senator

Lautenberg's net worth was estimated at $57 million in 2011

Lawmakers are under fire for awarding a $174,000 tax-free gift to the widow of late Senator Frank Lautenberg when the cash-strapped government can't even pay its own bills.

The tax-free payment for the surviving relatives of members of Congress is a time-honored perk of public service in Washington. The gift is equal to the member's annual salary at their time of death, which in the New Jersey Democrat's case, was $174,000. The payment is written into the appropriations bill that has been approved by the House of Representatives.

If the payment is approved by the Senate, as is expected, it would bring the total amount that Congress has given the families of deceased lawmakers to $2.6 million over the past decade, Fox News reports.

That’s what happens when it’s other people’s money.

yea!they can dish out 175000.00 to a millionaire senators widow but they will screw our veterans, widows and orphans out of their death benefits and healcare expenses.

But thats something the U.S.Congress has done for years.Stealing benefits away from veterans while continueing to increase their own.

What a bunch of worthless S.O.B.’s.

-- and 87 Republicans voted for it. --

It's literally voting money for their own posterity. Their families will get the same take out of the public treasury.

Think of them as glorified welfare voters, voting money for themselves at the expense of the public.

The scuzzballs dish out $175,000.00 to a multi-millionaire senator's widow......at the same time they screw our veterans, widows and orphans out of death benefits and health-care expenses.

You got that right.

Pols freely stealing from veterans while increasing their own wealth.....is nauseating

The death benefit is the tip of the iceberg. The greedy pols got zillions of ways to siphon off tax dollars for themselves. It's known that once they get into office---they do not spend a single solitary cent of their own money---they force struggling taxpayers to foot all their bills.

The area around the capital----where they all live---has been designated the wealthiest in the nation.

Its about time we ask how these creeps can afford these sprawling mansions, built on prime real estate, on a "govt salary."
