The Polar Express is Leaving the Station
Ive been watching the 10-day GFS forecast for the U.S., and each run is reinforcing the previous one, with a major cold air outbreak for most of the U.S. late next week.
Me: brrrrrr! Ice age coming? Some people think so.
Good one.
I’m cracking out the champagne when the mosquitoes DIE!!!!!!
Texas bubbas cant drive on either snow or ice.”
I didn’t head to Texas until 1985 but I remember the first time they had ice on the interstates in Houston. People would drive 70 mph until they got to the overpass, slam on their brakes, proceed at about 10 mph until they were clear of the overpass then hit the gas. What a hoot. I learned quickly to stay at home whenever we had black ice or even just one inch of snow. Was in Fort Worth in the early 80’s. They had a lot of ice and snow. But they had no snow plows or any way to treat the highways so we walked everywhere. Had to go get our own towels and fix our own food at the hotel because no one could get to work.
I knew someone would make fun of me about the 50 degree weather. Old folks have thin blood so 50 is way too cold. Don’t pick on us. I actually saw people in the city last night with hats, gloves and down filled coats on. All these new Yankees are loving it.
Parts of northern and west Texas can get pretty dicey in the winter.
Upper twenties? Possible snow? Hush your mouth! I refuse to hear such talk!
Thank you for your kindness, but I am going to decline to accept snow in October. Take it somewhere else, where people like that sort of thing. Ick.
I live in southwest Washington State. Every year in early November I have studded snow tires put on my 4WD Jeep.
The 240Z I mentioned in this post always had two sets of tires. It is a good vehicle for driving on snow or ice if you’re got studs.
It hasn’t been unusual during winter’s past for me to drive 70 to 80 miles on an interstate during a snowstorm. That’s why I was so horrified by the poor snow and ice driving skills exhibited by Texans when I lived there 30 years ago.
I grew up in NW Ohio near Lake Erie, so we had snow... (lake effect snow, it would be snowing where I was and 30 miles south nada) so I learned how to drive in it. The company I worked for relocated me to NYC in the mid ‘70s. A quarter inch of snow and those fools are panic stricken ;-)
LOL!! Sounds like the typical reaction of folks in big cities.
For my part, it wasn’t my driving in snow/ice that was the concern - it was how others drove.
All the wooly worms I’ve seen this fall are solid black.
This is a harsh prognosis for the little animals currently scampering about the woods behind my yard - soon it will be time to yank the planks and leave the beads hanging out on the line.
Something happens to these guys after a couple of terms in the Senate. Maybe during their first term. It becomes all about them and their imagined importance instead of doing the job of fair representation that they were sent there to do.
SW WI, 10-day: 43-51F daytime, 27-34F night.
Chilly, but normal. We will use the woodstove and wear appropriate clothing. Not a big deal, IMO.
America’s fault!
Accuweather.com says low 30’S for North Atlanta by Nov 1st. That’s not particularly shocking but it fits with the predictions for colder-than-normal temps for the Northern Hemisphere this winter season.
This morning I looked at the NOAA 3-month prediction map. Predicted 30% chance of warmer-than-normal in TX and some surrounding states and, IIRC, maybe SoCal. The entire rest of the country was an equal chance of being normal, colder or warmer, no prediction possible due to the chaotic nature of weather/climate.
The various Almanacs are not infallible, either.
Personally, I just take it a week at a time....sometimes less. I can’t count the number of times I have made plans based on a 10-day chart and then it changes about 4-5 days in.
We prepare for the extremes and if the weather is more mild than that, all is well. If not, then we are prepared and have survived it many times before.
