Upon draining out the tank to clean it out and patch the leak, they discovered the root cause of the disappearing fish:

Alright, that there is disgusting. In fact we need a better word than disgusting. It’s something I didn’t need to see or even know it existed.

...consume fish which they are able to grasp with their razor sharp teeth. It has been reported that in some cases the worm is able to strike its prey with such a velocity as to sever it in half.

I have had this happen in my own salt water tank. Things hatch and come out at night that you did not know were in the “live rock”. The night time aquarium is freaky.

Note that several of the segments survived, even after the aquarium keepers threw them out on the highway...

There are certain species of large worms that can live inside humans...

One such worm, Immanis Maximus, can be extremely difficult to eliminate or extract from the body.

In extreme cases the patient is put on a gurney, laying on the stomach. The physicians will prop open the patients mouth and set some raw meat just outside the mouth. When the worm starts to exit the mouth towards the meat, the physician literally grabs the worm and pulls it from the patient.

This is followed by treatments of antibiotics.

Well, after all, it can sever the fish in two, so the name is very appropriate, wouldn't you say?

When I was a kid, my friend and I thought it would be “nice” to let her pet turtle out of his little enclosure and put him in their 200 gallon tank of exotic fish. Oops! The turtle looked like a kid in a candy store and had chomped three or four exotic fish in half and eaten one whole before we could get him out! Her mother walked in to chunks of her beloved fish floating around! It was time for me to go home...

a 3.5 foot Eunice aphroditois better known as a Bobbitt worm.

Wait' this is a 200 gallon tank (not huge) and a 3.5 foot long creature could hid it for years ?

That must be a typo...

If I were a stockholder of that aquarium, I’d be firing everyone within a mile of that tank. Ten years and the staff never knew about a 3.5 foot creature eating all those expensive fish? Imagine what else they were too lazy to do.

It doesn't say whether they are native to Ecuador, however.
