Do we know how bad HealthCare.gov really is yet?

For the past two and a half weeks – sadly partially silenced by the government shutdown and debt ceiling drama – Obamacare as an information system has been melting down since enrollment in the “exchanges” or “marketplaces” for health insurance went live at the HealthCare.gov website on October 1, 2013. It’s clear that the situation is bad, and is starting to alarm even the most forgiving to the President and his policies, as liberal Statist sites like The Huffington Post publish articles with titles like “Obamacare Website Failure Threatens Health Coverage for Millions of Americans”.

The actual file name of that post is simply delicious: “obamacare-train-wreck_n_4118041.html”.

We’re starting to see lots of material being published about how HealthCare.gov came into being, and either baffled disappointment or a sense of “what else did you expect?” at how a web application project that as much as $634 million has been spent on can’t handle user loads, deliver simple web pages, or manage to correctly display drop-down list box contents, much less enroll millions of uninsured Americans for soon-to-be-universally-mandated health coverage.

It’s also been reported that of the people who have managed to actually not have HealthCare.gov error on them and get themselves enrolled that incorrect information has been passed to the insurers via the government’s website and that possible compromises of personal information (leaving enrollees vulnerable to identity theft) have both occurred.

I have no doubt it is much, much worse than could ever imagine. Otherwise Obie would not be out tomorrow with his puppets.

When the IRS is making medical decisions for you and your doctor, I think we’ll find out. This might be a good time to start paying some income taxes to the IRS if you’re not already doing so. Even if no taxes are due. Yeah, I’m talking to the 48 percenters who don’t pay any income taxes.

I am not going to find out.

I live outside the US. I will probably never return to the US. If the US government tries to make an Ex-pat sign up for one of these I will simply renounce my US citizenship and become a naturalized Chinese

One time I might have countered you on this. I can’t and won’t now.

I recently have pondered the idea of becoming an ex-pat ... once unthinkable.

Do not get lost in the forest looking at the trees.
The web site is the easy part. It will get fixed.

The real bad part is the Obamacare law.

It is a pure and simple case of paying for the healthcare of lazy and illegals by the hard working middle class. I have no problem helping those citizens with pre-conditions who can not get insurance. I just hate being forced to pay for the lazy and illegals.

Millions of people arrive legally to this great country. Most of them work hard and become useful, productive and tax paying citizens. Many can not speak good English. When I arrived, I was fluent in English but had no relatives or friends to support me if I needed help. If I could achieve my dreams of success, anyone else who works hard can achieve it.

The creeping socialism is the surest way to destroy the greatness of America, one of the few places where one can succeed starting from scratch.

I'm sure you and I would agree that this could have been achieved without upending the healthcare of all Americans. As someone earlier commented, this whole thing is a giant scheme of wealth redistribution ...

If this chart is any indication, and this chart is 'old' so there is no doubt more to it now, we are screwed!

My situation is different than yours.

My wife is Chinese, my kids are 1/2 Chinese. I have lived outside the US for a long time because that is what makes sense for my family. The only thing tying me to the US is my aged parents.

I do not encourage people to leave the US

I’m half expecting the president to announce tomorrow that they will be switching to paper application and will be printing and mailing information to every household in the country.

If they’ve had 3 1/2 years to work on this website and its still not working, then it might be time for Plan B, which will create a million paper shuffler jobs and keep the post office busy.

Well, I think you underestimate the importance of the cost inflation, which of course compounds, and is compounded by, the expanded coverage you insist is the “pure and simple” problem.

Technical “sign up” and security/identity theft issues aside, nobody will begin to know how bad things are until 2014. In 2014 a comparison of the revenue coming in from ALL Obamacare participants (i.e., their premiums) with the medical costs being paid by the participating insurers will provide a picture or indicator of how bad things will become. If the premiums are outweighed by the costs (and I suspect they will—BIG TIME) then the participating insurers in the Exchanges will have to raise rates beginning with 2015 and/or lower reimbursement rates to physicians/providers. That will mark the beginning of the classic “death spiral”. I think it will be bad indeed. More and more of the better physicians will decline to any longer take Exchange insured individuals as patients.

I’m not sure if Insurers participating in the Exchanges will be allowed to withdraw. If they are I would expect numbers of them to withdraw from participation with “new” insurers not the least interested in replacing them.

Yeah, I’m with you. CR, however, is supposedly non-political ... yes, which probably means they can’t protect themselves.

Heck, after Fidel goes, Cuba might be a go. :o)

How about we three go to CR and give each other moral support!

I, too, am convinced of the death spiral. I really think young people are going to shun this thing big time.

How old were you when you thought, “Oh, I need to sign up for health insurance”?

I was in my 30s.
