They Will Smell Your Food From Miles Away…
SHTF Plan ^ | 10/23/13 | Tess Pennington

Posted on 10/23/2013 2:44:48 PM PDT by Kartographer

Scenario: It’s been 20 days since the blackout and 3 days since you have eaten. All the store shelves have been cleared out and there is no sign of recovery. The lucky ones already made their way out of the city, but there are some who decided to stay in the neighborhood. After your daily dumpster diving for food and supplies, you are walking past an apartment complex and smell a delicious aroma. Could it be the smell of stew making its way out of the window of the abandoned apartment complex? At this point, you have nothing to lose and your sole thought is on survival. It’s either you or them so what would you do?

Had someone rifling through my trash can two weeks ago.

Woke me up.

4:00AM.

Caught him red handed.

Well, red pawed...

400 - 600 pound bear.

If I needed the food, he would have been acceptable.

We were less than three feet apart (and a door, of course).

Easy shot at that range...

Keep your eyes peeled downwind.

That is the dog’s job. I am backup on that one.

Most dogs of my acquaintance point their noses into the wind. They’re great for facing away from the fire at night, though.

“offer to work”
And that is one of the best survival skills.

Bears are great survival food, full of needed fat. Plus useful grease, and a fur coat.

They bark at things in the night at least twice a night now. Bears from downwind would be my greatest concern. Bears and mountain lions would take most of the prowlers at nigh.

Boil socks?

***

They’re more palatable that way.

Bear grease is great for sealing containers. Crocks of meat used to be sealed with a layer of grease on top. There are too many tricks of survival to mention because there are more situations to consider.

Well we are not going to be in suburbia so it won’t matter to us. Up in the mountains there will be so much smoke from everyone’s woodstoves nobody will know who’s cooking what. But in the burbs you might need to think about it.

during the North Korean commie famine of the mid-90’s (not the one they are having now) millions perished. Escapee’s said the ones who suffered and died the most were those most loyal and trusting of the government to come and help them.

I’ve seen that grenade before, but can’t remember from where. What’s it from?

Reminds me of an old Homer & Jethro tune about a guy who got a new “coat made out of polar bear hide, still had the polar bear inside”.

Best reply so far. I suppose a still might be a smell that many might track down.

In a real SHTF situation, people will be eating what they have in the fridge and pantry for several days. But, one has to think about the ones who don’t have three days of water/food and most likely those are the ones who are more prone to violence faster than other folks.

After two days of not caring about food smells, I will go into the “no smell” period which means I use my canned heat and Sterno stoves upstairs in an extra bathroom dressing area with no windows. Space under the door will be stuffed with a towel. The door to that bathroom will never be left open. I can do that for more than a year.

I can drink water downstairs but not eat food downstairs unless it doesn’t smell, like maybe a granola bar.

The article says exactly what I thought should be done and that’s using canned heat and Sterno stoves. And, as said in the article, I won’t be going outside in front of my house. I can go outside under a roofed deck immediately outside my back door because there are high brick walls no one can see over, especially if I’m under the roof of that deck.

Don’t be up front with your preps to anyone when the SHTF. It is not bragging time about what you have.

“The “city” is the last place I would be.”

It’s according to your definition of “city” and according to where you are in that undefined city.

If it happens in the winter, we can eat from our freezer for quite awhile, we keep it out in the garage. Would save the canned goods for later.

But, you can always add the smell of burning zombies to counter the good food smell.
Remember, the good food smell can also be used as a bobby trap diversion.
