Raynard JacksonTwo weeks ago, I was sent a video of a Hispanic woman interrupting a speech by Jeff Stratton, president of McDonalds USA. He was giving a speech at the Union League Club of Chicago.
Nancy Salgado, the Hispanic woman in question, became Exhibit A for whats gone wrong in todays workforce: rudeness and what the Bible calls slothfulness.
Salgado is a 26-year-old cashier at a McDonalds in Chicago. She has two children out of wedlock and earns $8.25 an hour for working 30 to 40 hours a week. She has worked for McDonalds since she was 16 and claims, without offering any documentation, that she has never received a raise in her decade of working at Mickey Ds.
Salgado rudely interrupted Stratton speech by shouting, Do you think its fair that I have to be living on a poverty wage? Do you think its fair that I am making $8.25 while Ive worked for McDonalds for 10 years? Do you think its fair? My two kids are struggling because you cant raise our minimum wage. I dont believe thats fair. What do you have to say?
If I had been in the audience, I would have gladly answered for Stratton.
No, you dont have to live on poverty wages. If you have been with a local franchisee for 10 years and have never received a raise, then there must be a whole lot more to your story that you arent sharing.
McDonalds has one of the best training programs for their employees in the U.S.
It is not possible to work for a franchisee, take advantage of their training programs and not to receive raises and promotions. That cant happen at McDonalds, if you have a commendable work record.
Your fault The second point: Its not McDonalds fault that you decided to have two kids without the benefit of being married. If you couldnt afford to have children, why didnt you abstain, take birth control, or get married and then have kids?
Salgado wants to put that responsibility at the feet of McDonalds? Really? Give me a break. She made a series of horrible decisions and now she wants someone else to foot the bill for her mistakes.
The interruption was orchestrated by a liberal group that advocates $15 an hour wages for fast food industry employees. Salgado and the other protesters were issued tickets by the police for trespassing.
Mcdonalds story
McDonalds has a great story to tell, but for some reason they seem reluctant to tell it. The first thing they need to do is to reach out to their own franchisees, especially those in the Black and Hispanic communities.
I would start with Van Jakes, a retired NFL cornerback and a McDonalds franchisee for 21 years. He represents all that is good in a former professional athlete. He is a good corporate citizen in the Atlanta community and has been a good McDonalds franchisee.
During Vans time with McDonalds, he has had employees start at the bottom and now own their own restaurants. He found it inconceivable that any of his employees could work for him for 10 years, take advantage of the employee training programs, and still be in the same position that they started in. Others in the chain share that sentiment.
To malcontents
To McDonalds, I say stop being afraid to tell your story and take advantage of the great people you have within your organization, including Van Jakes.
And when it comes to Nancy Salgado and other malcontents, if they are that unhappy with their job, they can pick up their last check the same way customers pick up their Big Macs and French fries at the drive-thru window to go.

Not everyone gets to be an astronaut when they grow up. Someone's got to make the fries and mop the floors, kid.
There’s a reason some people are flipping burgers
hey shes lucky that shes gettin 8.25 minimum waig back wen i was a kid was like 5.00 and not only that but maebe without a minimum waig so high as 8.25 a dang bic mac wouldnt cost me 4.35 i mean come on guys remember when big macs were 2 for 2 dollars. make these people apreciate what they have and lower the minimum waig and see how greatful they are wen we raise it back to where it is. your not rocket scientists or nothin special you flip bergers and fry frys and you want $15 no way jose!!
I used to work at McDonalds - for about 9 months when I was 17 years old.
“Do you think its fair that I am making $8.25 while Ive worked for McDonalds for 10 years?”
If a person is making minimum wage for more than a year, you can bet that their worth less than that...
You can also bet there is a reason that slacker hasn’t been fired. Can you guess it?
something about the difference between dark meat chickens and white meat chickens?
This one is a “Dark Hispanic,” I believe. Still a protected species.
I was scrolling this thread on my phone and accidentally tapped your screen name - then I saw the spinning fan lamps! Lol!
Yes, I have a collection of silliness in there. That one with the fan cracked me up for some reason....
(Thanks for sharing the laugh with me!)
This woman should be fired.
I worked at Woolworth’s for about the same length of time.
I then got a job at an new upscale mall for $.30 more per hour. (A good increase in those days).
I worked there part-time while commuting to a local state college.
Then I taught school.
Then marriage.
Then children.
That’s how most of us did it in those days.
I have not one ounce of sympathy for this woman. Not one.
.
I don't really think I want this person handling food ... or breeding any more.
Wait, she’s was hired at $8.25? Did she start out above minimum wage?
That woman probably isn’t worth minimum wage
From the market. If she could get $8.26 or more elsewhere she would have. She is a limited person. Maybe McD is being gracious in keeping her this long.
Dear Selgado-thingie,
If you are still earning $8.25 per hour after 10 years - have you considered this may be the “Unseen Hands” of the market slapping you awake and trying to tell you to become more productive?
As you are from a minority with an average IQ less than whites, but above blacks, considering your past history of ‘riotous reproduction’perhaps you may benefit if I remind you of what those who stayed awake in class know about the difference between “productive” and “reproductive”?
I remember working on farms when I was a kid picking grapes & planting onion seed for $1.60 and hour. Minimum wage at that time.
