Secession will be a a natural by product of a total economic collapse. Some states will just simply refuse to go over the fiscal cliff and leave the union. They seceding states will reform as a new country or just be independent sovereigns. Either way they will be done with the imperfect disunion.

Political stunt or not, I’ve personally seen Weld County and why the secession talk is happening. Many people there are working hard with their own hands to produce in agriculture and energy. They don’t want their work to be stopped by socialist greed and snobbery in other counties and interests.
