Free Republic | November 1, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 11/01/2013 12:11:04 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Probably not. Just cure and smoke the meat and call that good.

When I was soda jerking at Mom’s cousin’s ice cream parlor, 2 fellows would come in and do that with a paper napkin in
between, then move to another booth and see if we could
separate them without spilling everything.
Now johnny, try separating them, with spilling.

It's actually pretty easy to carry those back to the sink and take it apart there. You just to have a steady hand. ;)

tillacum: Will Neem Oil work?

I believe that it will work on sucking and leaf eating insects since it is a systemic insecticide, with a limited 'half-life'.
The Bacillus Thuringienis is specific to the Lepodoptera family of moths and butterflies , and is 'organic' and found naturally in the wild .
Bt is generally found in powder form , can be mixed with water
and a few drops of liquid soap as a surfactant (made sticky on waterproof leaves)
and is not toxic to humans.

No. I whack Mr. Wonderful with a rolled up newspaper, LOL!

I don’t know where hitting a tree to make it produce comes from. Some Old Wives Tale.

As for me? I pray for a wet spring and no late frosts. I feed my fruit trees with a granular New Lawn Starter that is a 10-18-10 formulation as soon as they start leafing out.

Also, I don’t prune them until they are about 5 years old, so they can TAKE it.

My fruit trees produce quite well! TONS of cherries and peaches this season. My apples, not so much, but I got a TON of apples from friends, so Life Is Still Good. :)

Ok, I thought it was you who told me about that. It’s been a few years though, so I must be remembering wrong.

Oh, Boy! I was kinda underground and digging out from under for a few years, there. Glad to see you’re still alive and kickin’ up the dirt! :)

Managing a Garden Center these days, so that takes up a lot of my time, as well as running my little farm and Mr. Wonderful’s BIG farm in the next county.

Life Is Good! :)

Bit of a cold snap last night. The heavier fall beard sure was nice to be wearing this morning when I went out to check on everything. ;)

I had 44 for an overnight low, not sure what time that was, though.

Yesterday was a perfect day here, I was able to make a little sawdust for a bit. Today looks to be more of the same.

I posted a video of Gracie discovering a puppy in the mirror.

Hi Diana, good to hear from you. I was wondering about what you were up to. Figured you were keeping busy.

I have been reading up on peach trees lately. Some of the advice is to spray the trees around February to help prevent fungus. Do you do anything like that?

I had 44 for an overnight low, not sure what time that was, though.

Only a few degrees cooler than that here in the TX Hill Country. Got me in gear for working on my "Gonna be a Texas Prepper's Greenhouse". Measured for all my cuts on the wood for the ends, door, and window.

I was thinking of buying an electric stapler (not pneumatic, just electric) to staple the greenhouse film to the wood..Any recommendations out there? I will be stapling into treated pine.

From the reviews I've seen, it seems like my old hand stapler would probably be better.
