Michener Museum Is Sole U.S. Venue for Exhibit on Grace Kelly

The Michener Museum is the sole U.S. venue for exhibit about the life and fashion of the iconic Philadelphia-born actress and princess Grace Kelly

It's the golden Oscar that grabs you first, then that sleek, mint-green dress behind it. Both share a statuesque radiance, the unmistakable sheen of the iconic.

The Oscar is Grace Kelly's, which she won in 1955 for her role in "Country Girl," co-starring Bing Crosby and William Holden. The dress, a stunning body-hugging silk gown designed by Edith Head, is what she wore when accepting the award.

Both are what first meet the eye in "From Philadelphia to Monaco: Grace Kelly — Beyond the Icon" at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown through Jan. 26.

That dress was an unusual fashion choice for an Oscar winner, when most stars opted for something far more ostentatious. Elegant yet understated, it defined part of what soon would be known as the "Grace Kelly Look." As the Associated Press put it, "Grace Kelly — a nice girl from a nice family that made good taste glamorous."

Kelly would go on to an even more high profile role — as the Princess of Monaco, after her marriage to Prince Rainier III in 1956, and mother of Princesses Caroline and Stephanie and Prince Albert.

My favorite Grace Kelly line was when she was having a picnic with Gary Grant she asked if he wanted the breast or the thigh.

Grace Kelley was really something special. I am sure the passage of time has burnished her image but she was really special in the 50’s too.

The movie was “To Catch A Thief”.

I was in Cannes when Grace Kelly arrived for her wedding. It was quite a scene seeing her ship come in.

She made quite an impact considering she was only in a small number of films. Amazing that she walked away from it all. One of the great beauties, and one of my favorite movie stars (when movie stars were movie stars, dammit!).

Ha. That’s a laugh. Princess. Yeah, right. Kings and Queens. Dragons and unicorns.

She was very beautiful in her pictures. But I can’t see how she didn’t throw her life away.

So, you are saying being a movie star is better than having a family?

Grace Kelley was really something special

Photographically, one of the most beautiful women in cinema ever.

We always remember her, wearing a too tight girdle, smiling.

Classic Grace under pressure!

Don Rickles once said that he and Grace Kelly attended acting school together, except that “Grace was very wealthy. She didn’t show up, she just phoned it in.”

Her death in that 1982 car crash remains a mystery.

Why is it still a mystery? What sorts of things make the car accident suspicious?

IIRC, the mystery is whether the crash itself was accidental or did she suffer a heart attack at the wheel, causing the crash.

A tragic end for a lovely lady, no mystery there. A grieving husband & three grown children left behind.

Ah, but that's it -- she walked away from it. That's always intriguing.

Hey, she married the man she loved and raised a -- by European royal standards -- a very nice family. In rather comfortable surroundings I might add.

Had a stroke, crashed her car, no mystery.

Is it true the accident occurred at the same spot as the picnic scene?
