BALTIMORE (WJZ)—It’s a horrific story of man’s best friend becoming a woman’s worst nightmare. A Northeast Baltimore woman was attacked and killed by her own dog.
Rochelle Ritchie reports the pit bull had attacked before but was back in the owner’s custody.
Advocates say the attack should not have happened. The woman had a huge gash on her face from a previous attack from her dog.
Terry Douglass, 56, is the latest victim in Baltimore City to be killed by a pit bull, a dog she’s raised since it was a puppy.

I have met many a pit bull at the dog park that are sweet as pie. Would I ever own one? Probably not. Dogs are bred for specific purposes and pit bulls were bred for fighting in the dog pit. (Hence the name) If you have owned a dog bred for a specific purpose (herding, pointing, retrieving, going to ground) and observe them doing the job they were bred for they are “in the zone”. I have a Jack Russell mutt and if she gets a scent in a hole she is all over it, head in, butt up and tail going a mile a minute. It is hard to snap her out of it. I imagine a pit bull on the attack is the same thing. I don’t think pit bulls should be banned or anything like that but the owners must be held responsible for dogs under their care.
Sadly, even dog shows harm breeds. After Westminster, many people run out and buy "copies" of the winner. Doesn't work. Litter lot sales. Inexperienced breeders. Pressure to breed more and more of a certain breed. And the result is a bunch of roach-backed, dysplasia- prone mutts. The faults of a particular dog or breed are only accentuated by inexperienced breeders....
Pit Bulls are owned by two types of people.
People who are stupid and people who want to use the dog for intimidation.
The dogs are basically useless except to intimidate neighbors.
Easily said, but not easily done. Quite a few years ago a woman my wife worked with was going home to her apartment when she was attacked by two pit bulls that were left un restrained in the back of a pickup by some guy visiting another woman at the complex. She had over 400 stitches initially and years of reconstructive surgery after. The police never were able to identify who the guy was (I also suspect they didn't try all that hard). The woman he was screwing either didn't know how to find him or decided not to give him up.
I'm speculating at this point, but I suspect that even it they did find him he wouldn't have two dimes to rub together, and would be unable to compensate the woman for the injury his dogs did. This is often the case with the trailer trash people who own pit bulls. They don't have the assets to compensate anyone for even a tithe of the damage their animals do.
Breed specific legislation? What is this—DU?
Yeah, lets ban dogs so we can be safe ... like Chicago.

Pit bull or mouse, ANY animal that believes it’s superior to a human and bites that human needs a quick, on the spot death. Period. I’ve killed many dogs under that philosophy and never been prosecuted for it. And bite my tongue, the police were always on my side.
Ridicule all you wish.
You bet we have the freedom to be ignorant. And that word means ‘uneducated’ or perhaps ‘uninformed’ sometimes with a ‘rude’ component.
So, willfully burying your head in the sand about a subject as plain as the inherent problems with this breed, generates in me the hope that I do not read a news account of a certain Freeper getting mauled along with his earlier quotes about how great Pit Bulls are.

I live in rural AR close to the Amish of Little Rock. When I spot a pit bill loose on the street, I pull over and dispatch it from the vehicle with my scoped, suppressed 10/22. Loose pits=bullet magnet.
Pit bulls and idiots go together like love and marriage. Keep the two of them together long enough and one will eliminate the other.
This is absolutely correct, some of the show standards nowadays are horrendous. I’m sure you’re talking about roach-backed German Shepherds, and the kicker is that those that don’t breed to the show standard (either the elongated American type or roached German show type) are ridiculed. I know, because I breed German Shepherds that have a straight-backed appearance and have had issues with people posting about my dogs on GSD sites. Unfortunately people see a dog on tv and want it, and then you have greedy people out there just looking to make a buck off that.

I own a pit bull, he was a rescue dog who was beaten by a previous “owner” who broke the dogs front right leg and never took the poor animal to a vet, resulting in a deformed leg and a dog with a permanent limp.
After such abuse your kind will think that this vicious dog will be ready to maul the next human he comes in contact with.
Instead, i have the most gentle, loving dog I have ever owned after 46 years of dog ownership. He was a birthday gift for my 10 year old son and the two of them are inseparable, they sleep in bed snuggled up with each other. they play out in the back yard and I dont have one bit of apprehension about it.
Its all in how you raise the dog, I would be willing to bet that statistically there are more bites by your yappy little home breeds like spaniels rather than the pit bull.

I see that I'm not allowed to have an opinion which is based upon my own experience and my acknowledgement of a certain body of factual evidence.
If I choose to state the plain truth as I see it, I get pigeon holed and called nasty names by people who feel offended. I would expect that sort of treatment at DU, but not here.
Pit bull lovers are just as irrational here as anyone on DU.
