An FDA spokeswoman tells Mother Jones the agency is evaluating whether to require US emergency contraceptive pill makers to change their labels.
The European manufacturer of an emergency contraceptive pill identical to Plan B, also known as the morning-after pill, will warn women that the drug is completely ineffective for women who weigh more than 176 pounds and begins to lose effectiveness in women who weigh more than 165 pounds. HRA Pharma, the French manufacturer of the European drug, Norlevo, is changing its packaging information to reflect the weight limits. European pharmaceutical regulators approved the change on November 10, but it has not been previously reported.
This development has implications for American women. Some of the most popular emergency contraceptive pills sold over the counter in the United Statesincluding the one-pill drugs Plan B One-Step, Next Choice One Dose, and My Way, and a number of generic two-pill emergency contraceptiveshave a dosage and chemical makeup identical to the European drug. Weight data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that, at 166 pounds, the average American woman is too heavy to use these pills effectively.

Ever been inside a Wal-Mart, dollar store or mall? That’s half the women in this country. I weigh 340 and I regularly see young women who weigh the same or more than I do in many venues.
Never heard of a larger dose?
Not to be insensitive, but a gal in excess of 176 lbs is freakin' HUGE.
Is there a height limit?
Not a lot of healthy people walking around compared to the past. I need to drop about 40 myself.
The only way it works is if I restrain myself from feeding the pie hole. Not easy.
I’ll probably get Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass next year before I lose my legs and eyesight. You have to jump through some hoops, but it’s free.
I know all the right things to do.
Fastest health diet thing I know of is Medifast. Cheaper than eating regular food and it is balanced to not have you become diabetic trying to lose the weight. Keeps the sugar levels normal while losing the weight.
It was working for me and I got lazy and went back to some over eating.
It is always over eating and it is worse if you pick bad things to over eat.
This development has implications for American women....
I think if they are over 176 lbs, they don’t need the after morning pill.
“but a gal in excess of 176 lbs is freakin’ HUGE. “
Might be okay if she’s about 6’4” tall.
Horrible news!!!! who doesnt love a huge girl
I can just see MO ramping up her “Let’s Moooooooove” campaign even harder. “Gotsa get dem b*tches down to da liiiiiine.”
Aw gee. They will need to give out Michelle Obama Let’s Move videos with those pills.
I am already a diabetic. Gastric bypass is being reported to cure diabetes ON THE TABLE due to changes made in your gut.

Not biting.
So is Michelle right? We do have an obesity problem in this country?
