But when you’re talking rap, I don’t see myself ever coming around to that.

I think we might be long lost twins. ;)

Them and XTC. Andy was a flippin' lyrical genius, right up there with the Brian Wilsons and Lennon/McCartneys. "Travels in Nihilon" sounded like something Radiohead would have done 15 years later, and then he could do absolutely stunningly beautiful tunes like "Ladybird" and "Chalkhills and Children" or "Knights in Shining Karma" And IMHO the most perfect pop song ever, "Mayor of Simpleton."

Somehow XTC was never on my radar. It seems I am confined again today and my cable, after a thaw, or more likely thanks to a lineman, has found new life; I think I'll investigate this XTC you speak of.

AAAH!!! Truly a face only a mother could love. Bless his heart for the new teeth, though!

I loved looking at the pics on that link. I haven’t thought of some of those bands in years. I am happy to see that the Flock Of Seagulls singer has lost that modern art masterpiece of a “hairstyle.”

And what in the hell happened to Pete Burns? S/he looks one or two plastic surgeries away from being another Jocelyn Wildenstein. Yikes.

Black Velvet was so soulful. What happened to female artists today? Gaga, Perry, Spears etc...? They’re all show, (mostly vulgar), with no song writing talent. A good song used to tell a story, know it’s all about bodily functions. Nobody has to show their tush if they have genuine talent!

Neil Finn, formerly of Crowded House.

Neil Finn's "Song of the Lonely Mountain" was composed for end credits of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. His sons Elroy and Liam perform with him.[13](Wiki)

I agree with you on all those...that kind of music makes me sick. I call it cotton candy music. I don’t know if you know her music or will like it, but check out Florence of Florence and the Machine. She’s an amazing talent. Not just on video, but can sing live, too, in radio studios just off the cuff. Wonderful lyrics in her songs, too. And what a beauty! Lots of new artists on alternative radio are giving me hope that we are coming out of the “dark ages” as my 16 year old told me not too long ago. Interesting lyrics...songs that are meaningful.

I’ll link a couple here of Florence...live stuff. The radio one mini-concert is THE best.

Check this out!:

And this...SO terrific. She has such a way with the crowd. Mucho positive energy! Makes one feel good to watch her:

“Neil Finn’s “Song of the Lonely Mountain””

I had no idea until I read that this morning. Good to know these guys are still creating.

P.S. Listening to Florence+The Machine right now in the background. She’s amazing. Thanks! Thanks!

SO happy you are liking her! Really smiling. Man, she makes me feel good. And it’s not just one song with her. She’s got a ton that I like. Check out these lyrics. Love the line about cutting out her graceless heart!

“Shake It Out”

Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play

And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
It’s always darkest before the dawn

And I’ve been a fool and I’ve been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I’m always dragging that horse around

Our love is pastured, such a mournful sound
Tonight I’m gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues drawn
But it’s always darkest before the dawn

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

And I am done with my graceless heart
So tonight I’m gonna cut it out and then restart
‘Cause I like to keep my issues drawn
It’s always darkest before the dawn

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back
And given half the chance would I take any of it back
It’s a fine romance but it’s left me so undone
It’s always darkest before the dawn

Oh whoa, oh whoa...

And I’m damned if I do and I’m damned if I don’t
So here’s to drinks in the dark at the end of my road
And I’m ready to suffer and I’m ready to hope
It’s a shot in the dark aimed right at my throat
‘Cause looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me
Well what the hell I’m gonna let it happen to me, yeah

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
Shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, shake it out, ooh whoa
And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, oh whoa

The Cure

Whew, the old saw about the cure being worse than the disease seems apropos of Smith's attempt to transcend his every-man name and toward a more idiosyncratic plane. He should go with lavender lipstick.
