The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Uh oh—you’re supposed to put your seeds in the freezer between growing season? *sob*

Marcella, where did you get your knee stand? I assume it’s a foamy sort of base that you kneel on with two rails that you can hold on to to get yourself up?

Sockmonkey, is it necessary in your home remedies to eat the seeds, or can I just deseed them and struggle them down that way?

This past Monday, I felt like I was coming down with a cold, so I went out to my little Texas Prepper's Greenhouse, snapped off a jalapeno that had turned red, and ate half of it..

I was going ooh, ow, yikers..It was hot. Later on, I ate the other half, which was full of seeds. Yes, the seeds are hotter. I drank some eggnog to cut the heat, and hoped it wouldn't kill the effect. By the next day I was feeling a lot better, and by Wednesday, I was at 100%.

I was thinking it beat the heck out of those old turpentine mustard plasters my Grandma tried to poison all the Grandkids with back in the day.

“Marcella, where did you get your knee stand?”

It's the best thing since sliced bread. It's stationed right now in front of my TV set and it's hardly noticeable. It just ended up there but that's not where I'll have it. It is hard metal that comes up on both sides with two soft enough cushions. You use it two ways. Put it with the cushions next to the floor and you can easily kneel holding onto the two sides. Getting up using the sides is totally easy.

Then, you can turn it over, which gives you two long sides on the floor and a raised seat. Ordered it from Walmart $28.53 and worth every penny.

Any store you go in now is going to have sick people in it. I’m not going in Walmart until late spring and I’ll try not to then. Too many germs in that place.

When I get home from anywhere, I immediately go in the kitchen and wash my hands very well.

You can buy bottled jalapenos with no heat in them. Walmart has their brand and Kroger has their brand, get mine at Kroger. That’s the only jalapenos I eat and they are delicious. Eat as many as you like on whatever you’re having that goes with jalapenos. Get a bunch of tortilla chips, put Mexican blend shredded cheese on them and japapenos on top and micro for several seconds and then eat.

I had a pen I ordered early this year to write on the plastic tags and the ink would spill out and get on me and it came off those tags. It was garbage.

So, at the Mega Store there was one that the customers swore by didn’t come off even in the rain, so I ordered that one and have it. I’ll use it and see what happens.

The freezer or the refrigerator is a good place. After letting the seed sit for a while on top of the refrigerator during the summer to dry enough so they won’t mold, I put mine in old medicine bottles and label them, and then put them in an old coffee can with the lid on it in the frig.

This is to simulate winter is the way I understand it. I am not sure whether all seeds need it or not. It’s not too late. Two weeks in the freezer is sufficient for that. It’s just that I have read that the cooler temps are the best way to “preserve the viability” of the seeds.

If you do winter sowing, you don’t really have to do this. Your seeds will be outdoors in the cold from January on.

Yep, a person can string out that taking down stuff for months. Just a little per day. For a few years, I had a small tree that I just put into a pillow case, and stuck it in the closet.

I like the decorations, but hate the put up and take down especially the lights. So Just taking out a tree and plugging it in worked pretty well.

We had some years when my parents brought some artificial trees for the kids and they had trees in their bedrooms in additon to all the other stuff.

Plus I think putting up lights outside and taking them down is pretty obnoxious too. Why not just leave them up all year and just plug them in for the holidays? Not that we have done that-but why not? LOL

Thanks for the pictures. We had snow during the night and all morning: White Out conditions and grey skies. Temps were hanging in around freezing and a couple of degrees above.

We are supposed to get enough warming for some major melting before the next storm hits in about 6 days.

My seeds would take the whole freezer. I just keep them in a box in my bedroom. Some of the packets are 10 years old, but they still grow.

Since I haven't had a whole growing season, I don't care about the rules yet. I recall greeneys saying she keeps her in a container in her fridge. Guess rightly puts them in the freezer. I'll research that and find out what others do and come up with the method most use, so don't freak out, I'll get back to you.

I got some wild strawberry seed and the envelope said freeze them for three weeks before planting them and I did that - none came up, then I read those wild strawberries don't do well here, so freezing didn't do squat to help them grow in my area.

One important fact I have learned is growing is local and every piece of land/dirt is not equal.

I used to make a hot and sour oriental broth with hot pepper seeds, chicken broth and some other stuff. It helped a lot with sinusitis and colds.
