An Education Intelligence Agency analysis of Internal Revenue Service filings reveals 25 National Education Association state affiliates spent more than they earned in the 2011-12 school year, even though many of them instituted large-scale layoffs, staff cuts and early retirement incentives.
The union as a whole lost 3.6 percent of its active membership, but increases in rates were able to compensate so that total dues revenues increased 0.6 percent to $1.414 billion.

Hey now. Spending more than you take in is all the rage these days. Ya gotta do it to be “cool”. Just ask the “lyin’ king”. But you better hurry. They’re getting ready to take off on that all expense paid vaca to Ha vah eee for 17 days. But I read somewhere that he’s really “suffering” due to the low poll numbers. Awwww.
I was talking to a state worker friend about the way my private company handled the introduction of PC’s vs. the typing pool. At Honeywell, we all got PC’s and the typing pool was immediately laid off. I think it took a total of 30 days. He told me that the state kept everybody on the typing pool even though they had nothing to do. Some gradually found other jobs, some retired, some stayed on reading novels at their desks until retirement. But nobody was actually fired.
I suspect that the labor unions have a similar issue. Technology has obsoleted many positions, but they still have and are paying the employees. They need a tough-minded CEO to come in and shake the place up.
Having said that, I hope it doesn’t happen and they all go broke.
