What will Google and Bing do for Christmas?

Ulysses S. Grant passed legislation making December 25th a national Holiday in the USA. The day is also celebrated all over the world.

Whether you are a Christian or Jew or Arab, like the Three Wise Men, it is common to give gifts on this day, and send cards to your family friends and neighbors. When I was young, there was no controversy, no fear of a religion being shoved down someone's throat. It was plain and simply a day we were off from school, and we all knew why.

The day simply commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ, a man who actually lived and died. Unlike the birthdays of other great people we celebrate, such as Lincoln, Washington, Columbus and Martin Luther King, for some reason a vast and well marketed lobby exists through out our land that denounces and restricts the celebration.

We're not talking about prohibiting mention of Christianity, I'm talking simply of the day depicting a birth of a human being, recognized by leaders in this country that he lived a life worth the celebration.

In former generations, it was common to have nativity scenes in public places that denote the birth of baby Jesus. High school choirs would sing across the land the Messiah, but what do we have today? Court orders to block the singing, the scenes and any reference in class to this man unless perhaps it's a private school. Some people are fanatical in their hate for the man, that they loathe any mention of him.

Our president sends a generic card that mentions "holidays" but never a mention of Jesus, yet we have public announcements from him about Mohammed and the sprit of Kwanzaa, the latter depicted on postage stamps but not Jesus.

In short, the idea is to remove the reason for the day, and make it simply something else. The idea is to not speak the man's name, or make any reference to him, even though his birth is a National Holiday.

Does anyone else find this strange? I do. Remove any reference of religion or even of the man himself when learning about him. AS a human being, just read about what he said and did. How is he different than other human's who have lived a life worth emulating? How are the words and deeds of Jesus reviled when the same of Ghandi and MLK and JFK etc give us joy?

So, once again we await how Google and Bing will cloak the day in their website banner. No doubt, Google will wrap the day together with Hannakah, Kwanzaa and maybe a sled and reindeer.

Bing, however, may do it differently, in honor of the man who was born this day.

Anyone else care to make a prediction?

Why, after 16 years of creating secular doodles, would you expect Google to all of a sudden start creating religious ones?

By the way, you can go to http://www.google.com/doodles/finder/2013/All%20doodles and look at all the Google doodles for the past 16 years.

What will Bing do for Christmas?

Why, sing Christmas Carols with David Bowie :) (or at least that’s on youtube...)

I just remember (I’m sure others do as well) that the last time there was a disagreement between the two on this issue, it was Bing, not Google, who was on the right side.

Bing.

I changed my link that day. Now I search using Bing mostly. And I use it as a default.

Keep up the good work Bing. I’ll be interested to see what happens tomorrow.

Bing is my search engine of preference.

I’m not going to stay awake all night worrying about what Google does.

I’m going to stay up all night waiting for Santa Claus!!!

Same here. I changed my default search engine to Bing when that happened, and have never gone back to Google.

Below is the Google Christmas Eve Doodle. Bing is currently running some kind of animated .gif showing people walking through what looks like a Christmas light show.

It never concerned me however what images Search Engines like Google and Microsift (Bing) run on their websites. Those are private companies and they can observe Christmas and the other holidays as they choose.

What irks me as a taxpayer however is that the government "bans" Christmas in schools and public buildings, etc. That is highly offensive to me, especially as they have no problem observing all the other holidays such as Valentines Day, Thanksgiving and Halloween.
