Question: Best way to get music from my home server to my stereo system?
3 February 2013 | Notary Sojac

I have over 300 GB of high quality (256 and 320 MP3, and FLAC) digital audio in a hard drive on my home server.

About forty feet away is my living room stereo, an old but quite decent sounding Technics receiver (which far predates the networking era) and floor-standing JBL speakers.

What I would like to figure out is a way to get the latter to pull tunes from the former, via my wireless router.

Is there a device that will read the server contents and feed them to my existing receiver's audio inputs?? What is it?? Or do I need to get a new receiver that will recognize the network, and if so, what sort??

The only "must" feature is that I want to be able to browse the folders and files of my music collection from the living room (receiver) location.

And yes, I have thought of just buying a laptop and sticking it in the living room, but the design of my stereo shelving wouldn't permit that without a major rebuild. Something with front panel display, that would fit in a stereo component sized hole (replacing the CD player it would make redundant) is what I'm really hoping to find.

Thanks as always to the Freeper community for your expertise......

It's easy, here's how: <img src="insertlinkhere">

Just right click over the image and copy the address and paste it between the quotation marks. No spaces allowed.

Sonos! You’ll be able to play it anywhere in your house and it has a great selection of music via streaming.

I have an old Carver CM-1090 driving two JBL Studio Monitors (commercial version of the old Century 100s - my JBLs have been rebuilt by JBL once as they’re over 40 years old).. I use a Mac Mini to supply the music, it does this via a USB audio interface {BEHRINGER U-CONTROL UCA202)

Yes, I just use iTunes, but this allows to also send music to other audio systems in my house over the network. I use Apple Airports (they have audio jacks - optical even)

It sounds great - And I can pick my music via my iPad.

Later versions of I-touch devices can share audio files off a wireless network drive using a headphone jack to RCA plug cable, plus allow you to play Pandora Internet radio though your stereo. You might be able to pick up one used.

If only I could upload photos to FR...

You can't. But you CAN link to an image on an external site. See post #21.

Or the FR HTML Sandbox.

I run my computer into my amp via the standard audio jacks. For video, I have my computer hooked into my TV via HDMI cable (HDMI2) so that I can parallel my audio for youtube etc.

It sounds like you are missing a DAC. The server outputs a digital stream, right?

I have a 3TB Mybook Live external NAS drive plugged into my router. Then I have a PS3 hooked up to my TV and stereo surround sound system. The PS3 will search for media servers and pick up my Mybook. I can then play any song I want via the PS3 interface.

Whoa. I wonder if that mod works on other transmitters. I have a couple and they suck. Every song has a nice mix of static in the background. Been looking for a decent transmitter for a while.

I noticed they are worse in the car when you are playing from an iPhone that is recharging at the same time.

Another option could be to put iTunes on the server, enable home sharing, then get an AppleTV to hook up to your receiver.

I just set one up for my mother-in-law for Christmas.

Pros:

It does not matter if the Mod works on others. It works on this one GREAT!!!! Like 3 blocks. I also went to Radio Shack and purchased a longer antennae. I have a 2 story 3,000 sg ft home with 8 radios in it. I have an extra iphone that I now use as an itouch and stream music all through my house. I have Pandora One on it and it is only $3 a month and has a higher bit rate and goes for 5 hours before you have to show activity. It is a no brainer.

Did you mean that you had other Ccrane Transmitters?

If you do, yes the Mod works on them.

I have the FM 1 and a friend has the FM 2......works on both

No. Some generic transmitters I bought years ago. I'll seriously look at the Ccranes possibly as a future gift to myself.

I’d go wire, audio out on the comp to audio in on the stereo. If you insist on going wireless a DLNA receiver hooked up to the stereo then you need to have DLNA sharing running on the computer sharing the music. 40’ cable is cheaper and easier to work with.
