I need some advice. I have a rather large collection of vinyl records that I plan to record to an external computer hard drive. The record player that I have uses i-tunes to process each cut onto the computer. Does anyone on here have any experience with this that could maybe recommend a different/better idea to handle saving everything on to the hard drive. I am looking for flexibility in moving the finished product between computers. This is going to be a pretty long-term project, what with cigar and bourbon breaks, and I want to get it as near right...

A scuffle at a Connecticut opera reveals the bleak future of the orchestra pit This August's production of Richard Wagner's four-opera Ring cycle in Hartford, Conn., has been postponed. Rather than hiring pit musicians, producer Charles M. Goldstein had intended to accompany the singers with sampled instrument sounds, played by a computer. Not a CD, not a synthesizer; the computer triggers the playback of individual notes (“samples”) originally recorded from real instruments. The reaction of professional musicians—and, of course, the musicians' union—was swift and furious. New York City's Local 802 president called it operatic karaoke. Hate mail poured in. In...

I have over 300 GB of high quality (256 and 320 MP3, and FLAC) digital audio in a hard drive on my home server.About forty feet away is my living room stereo, an old but quite decent sounding Technics receiver (which far predates the networking era) and floor-standing JBL speakers. What I would like to figure out is a way to get the latter to pull tunes from the former, via my wireless router. Is there a device that will read the server contents and feed them to my existing receiver's audio inputs?? What is it?? Or do I need to get...

Excerpt - Over the past few years, we have watched Apple climb the music sales chart courtesy of the iTunes. Last month we learned that Apple passed Best Buy to become the number two retailer in the the US in December. Now, Apple has ascended to the top of the charts, surpassing Wal-Mart for the first time ever, according to an NPD MusicWatch Survey for the month January contained in an internal Apple e-mail which was leaked to Ars Technica but has not been officially published. The news was announced in an e-mail sent this afternoon to some Apple employees,...
  • Trent Reznor: Why won't people pay $5?

Williams and Reznor were trying to follow the lead of Radiohead by distributing music online without the backing of a label. Like the British supergroup, Williams made the album available for free in one version but he also offered the option of buying a higher-quality digital download for $5. The promotions were groundbreaking and plenty of people predicted that a profitable outcome would convince many musicians to drop their labels and use the Internet to distribute their own artistic creations. And then Reznor ended the hoopla last week when he reported on his blog that 154,449 people had downloaded NiggyTardust...
  • Apple, Digital Music's Savior, Earns Record Industry's Scorn

Two and a half years after the music business lined up behind the chief executive of Apple, Steven P. Jobs, and hailed him and his iTunes music service for breathing life into music sales, the industry's allegiance to Mr. Jobs has eroded sharply. Mr. Jobs is now girding for a showdown with at least two of the four major record companies over the price of songs on the iTunes service. If he loses, the one-price model that iTunes has adopted - 99 cents to download any song - could be replaced with a more complex structure that prices songs by...
