City Councilman Resigns in Klingon

A North Carolina city councilman tendered his resignation by giving the mayor a short letter written in Klingon, a made-up language from "Star Trek." David Waddell resigned his post as an Indian Trail city councilman by giving Mayor Michael Alvarez a letter written in the language of the warrior species from the "Star Trek" films and TV shows and accompanied the text with a Bing.com translation, the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Friday.

"Teach [the] city [the] constitution," the translation read. "I will return next time to [witness] victory. Resignation occurs in 2014 the 31st of January."

"Perhaps today is a good day [to] resign," the letter concluded, paraphrasing the Klingon saying "Perhaps today is a good day to die."

Waddell described the Klingon resignation as an inside joke.

"Folks don't know what to think of me half the time," Waddell said."I might as well have one last laugh."

Waddell detailed the reasons for his resignation in a letter to citizens. He said he was concerned about the development of the city and the way requests for public information were being handled by the city's government.

He said he plans to mount a write-in campaign for the U.S. Senate with the Constitution Party.

Alvarez described Waddell's resignation as unprofessional.

"It's an embarrassment for Indian Trail, and it's an embarrassment for North Carolina," he said.

Well, if Waddell is right and the Mayor hasn't got a clue about the City Constitution, then Klingon will get the point across.

I never understood all the problems the Federation had with the Klingons: I would have simply fired Bounce sheets at them.

I heard Uranus had a big problem with Klingons.

I can’t think of any argument improved by the use of Klingon outside of a trekkie convention or an online flame-war.

It’s funny...I used to work with one of those Trekkie toons who learned Klingon and I also used to live in this town in NC. Not much happens there but a lot of people are moving away from Charlotte.

The works of Shakespeare are much better in the original Klingon.

I appreciate people who can both laugh and make you laugh and this guy sounds like someone I can relate to.

The last 9 years of my employment were spent in misery at my company's corporate office where the purveying attitude was if you weren't a manager you weren't entitled to joke around in the office. And the only manager who thought he had a sense of humor was the biggest dick the corporation had on its payroll.........

I live here. The town is divided (roughly) between those who want everything to stay exactly as it was when they moved here, and those who would like some roads repaved and stuff.

Mayor Alvarez is okay.

A true Klingon would never simply resign -- honor would demand Hegh'Bat

Interesting. In Oregon a while back, if I recall correctly, the state mental health services put an advertisement up for a job requiring Klingon competency, due to the presence of Klingon speakers among those in their care.

Your comment about “nerve” reminded me of Alex Lifeson of RUSH when giving his acceptance speech to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
