Two North Carolina parents are in shock after local police shot and killed their 18-year-old son in their own home, while they watched helplessly.
The family called police because they were worried about their son, Keith Vidal, who is schizophrenic and suffers from depression, according to local news. Vidal, armed with a small screwdriver, was apparently having a psychotic episode. Mark Wilsey, Vidals father, called the authorities to help deal with the situation.
An officer from the Brunswick County Sheriffs Office and another from the Boiling Spring Lakes police department showed up to the house soon after. Eventually, a third officer from the Southport police department entered the home as well, and ordered the use of tasers to subdue Vidal. According to Wilsey, Vidal was pinned on the ground by two of the officers when a third said, we dont have time for this, and shot Vidal, killing him.
Vidal had just turned 18, and weighed a mere 90 pounds. He couldnt have hurt anyone with the screwdriver, and had no history of violence according to family and friends.
There was no reason to shoot this kid, said Wilsey in a statement. They killed my son in cold blood. We called for help and they killed my son.
After her son was killed, Vidals mother suffered a mental breakdown and was treated by medical staff.
The New Brunswick County Sheriffs Office told The Daily Caller that no statement has been released yet, but the district attorney and state investigators are looking into the shooting.
A similar thing happened to a Georgia family in October. (RELATED: Family calls 911 for medical help, cops show up and kill son)
It’s almost always a bad idea to call the police.
yeah don’t call the cops unless you want someone killed or arrested
It’s not ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ any longer.
The cops who come to your house don’t care about you or your loved ones or your property. They take over and do what they want. If your dog gets in their way they will shoot it. If you get in their way they will arrest or shoot you.
It’s like having the UN show up at your house.
At least the cops went home safe./s There is going to come a time.
Really sad. He was a really talented artist who later committed suicide.
My father is a retired police officer, and I have known retired sheriffs, active cops, prison guards, etc., and know something of their mentality. They’re more concerned with being falsely accused of something, or giving people opportunity to accuse, since it is very common for people to make false accusations even in the midst of tragedies. I find it truly hard to believe that a cop just went over there and said “We don’t have time for this,’ and shot a person for no reason. It is more likely that the family invented this statement in order to set the stage for suing.
Without more details about the family, actual information about where the guy was shot, and what the police officers have to say in their defense, I would hesitate in condemning our men.
When it comes to loved ones it is always a bad idea to call the police. The moment that call is made all control over that situation by the caller is lost, and the police, unlike the caller, have zero affection for that loved one.
They had him restrained. That sounds like 1st degree murder right there. Are the parents going to press charges?
MEMO to the decent officers out there: CLEAN THE COWBOYS AND THUGS OUT OF YOUR RANKS OR THINGS WILL GET MUCH, MUCH WORSE FOR US ALL — INCLUDING YOU!!!!
I noticed before leaving that cops in America were morphing into jack-booted thugs. It has been a dramatic change, beginning in the 90s, or earlier.
Just like shooting the dog.
The cops spent their handling-the-mentally-ill training money on one of these.
“I would hesitate in condemning our men.”
They may be YOUR men, they are not mine. For that matter, they are not men, they are animals...
I’m going to say again what I’ve said before in some of these situations. If 3 men cannot restrain and unarmed man, or woman, without killing him or her, they do not have proper training or procedures in place.
Cops need to have video cameras on them and operating during all paid time. That will keep both sides honest.
Ultimately, they’re all just bureaucrats if they work for government and lack perception.
Irregardless of my last statement you are correct.
We don’t know what really happened.
I do believe the situation would have had to be extreme to justify shooting him. He was just a small guy and there were three officers there. How many does it take? It seems by weight alone they could have subdued him. Unless he had a gun or something.
Wilsui says everything was under control until a third officer arrived, and the situation took a dramatic turn.
Murder. They murdered our son for no reason, Wilsui said. “Everything was going good, then this fat cop from Southport walks in the room, walks around the corner, says, ‘we don’t have time for this. Tase that kid now, lets get him out of here.’”
Wilsui says like any teenage boy, his son tried to run when he heard the word tase.
“The tasers hit him, he fell back. Two officers were on top of him. You know, he’s got the little screwdriver. I mean, I would have went and got the screwdriver from him. I went to help, and I hear a shot, Wilsui explained.
Wilsui says he grabbed the officer so he could not shoot again.
>> he was tasered first and then shot
When you’re too lazy to attain decent shooting skills, the taser makes it easier to get the kill.
The time they save on target practice at the range gives the officer more time for union meetings, watching teevee, taking steroids, working out at the gym, &etc,
“I would hesitate to condemn our men” you say? Oh but it is just fine for to you condemn the grieving family with this beauty: “It is more likely the family invented this statement in order to set the stage for suing”. You jackboot cop-suckers are real pieces of work.
yeah dont call the cops unless you want someone killed or arrested..
BUT FIRST...they will kill the family dog. I think that’s Rule #1.
They should have called a plumber instead.
BTW how’s the family dog???
Many years ago a plumber in New Orleans, came out from under a house with a wrench, and was killed by police before he knew what was going on.
“I would hesitate to condemn our men you say? Oh but it is just fine for to you condemn the grieving family with this beauty: It is more likely the family invented this statement in order to set the stage for suing. You jackboot cop-suckers are real pieces of work.”
I said that was the “most likely” situation, and that’s just a fact. Believe it or not, people are liars. I’ve seen it, I’ve heard it, and I’ve known it. People lie, make up stories, exaggerate claims, even when the whole incident is caught on camera. ‘This cop kicked the **** out of me!”, and then the dash cam has them throwing punches and initiating the fight. And I would expect this to be a lie than thinking that a cop would, without hesitation, shoot someone on the basis of “saving time,’ when there are lawyers and civil rights attorneys and internal investigations that could land you in prison for the rest of your life. This is the kind of stuff you believe in, without question, if your life were a cartoon, or if you’re a Liberal trying to abolish the second amendment or play up alleged institutional racism in our law enforcement.
Only the police and military can be trusted with guns. They have special training.
Thank you! My Hub is a retired police officer, our son and son-in-law are active police officers in 2 large cities here in Texas. We have a few on this site that broad-brush when it comes to police officers. I too find it hard to believe an officer would willingly shoot a kid that’s down for no reason at all.
By the way, the “grieving family” bit. What about Travyon’s ‘Greiving family?” They had their criminal son, this thug with photos of himself with pistols, smoking pot, and giving the finger, made into a martyr on the basis of their ‘greiving’ and their false claims to the media.
You think that doesn’t happen against Cops too? Was Zimmerman vulnerable to outright lies from even the “grieving family” because he wasn’t a cop?
C’mon now. You guys need to grow up and stop trying to try people in the media. I’m sure there are plenty of bad cops out there. But, calling cops “animals,” and other such things, based on a news story, is just outright stupid.
Go head over to DU, the whole lot of you, who sit there spitting on our law enforcement as a whole.
New flash: cops are people.
Your post did nothing for most of us that come to FR to actually try to find "the truth". A waste of time was your post.
Yep, cops lie all the time.
Well.. there Ya have it. When they started shooting dogs some of us figured they would not stop there.
The police are no longer there to protect or serve.
One thing in the story I don’t agree with. A screw driver is a weapon even in the hands of a 90 pound boy.
My heart goes out to the family.
” Believe it or not, people are liars. Ive seen it, Ive heard it, and Ive known it.
Your delusional you _puny _human. This is SOP for cops...
That old thing about “men in white coats” taking away crazy people, was it ever real, and if so, why did it stop?
“The family said police shot Vidal because he had a screwdriver in his hand. They said it was a tiny screwdriver that would not have hurt anyone. “
If he wasn’t going to hurt anyone (he was attacking his mother with the screwdriver according to the step-father)) why did they call police instead of a doctor?! Now, they are blaming the police.
The kid tried to get up and run when he heard they were going to taser him according to reports. He wasn’t just laying there, he was fighting them with a screwdriver in his hand.
“I too find it hard to believe an officer would willingly shoot a kid thats down for no reason at all.”
Cops should be trained in conflict resolution, something BTW that comes mothers and Nuns in Catholic schools know instinctively.
If they can’t deal with conflict other than with lethal force, they don’t belong on the force. If two officers are on top of a 90 pound kid and can’t subdue him... Never mind, that’s just crazy.
The last bill that JFK made law was to empty the mental hospitals, it took a while for the system to change around the nation and the lawyers to enforce the law with their lawsuits, but it did come to create the homeless that you see wandering the streets talking to themselves.
“Neighbors on the scene told WECT that Vidal played with their children and he never was violent. They said he had a history of depression and schizophrenia, but he was never harmful to others.”
I think I remember neighbors and friends saying the same thing about Adam Lanza and he murdered a school full of children.
Your little jackboots never lie!!? Your little jackboot’s rages never get on tape by their own damn cameras!!? You think they are concerned with a stretch in the can? What world do you live in? I never said that the family is right here, they could be all full of it for all I know but you, like your fellow knee jerk jackboot lickers, think they are never wrong so you just gotta jump right in and slam the grieving family with your premise. Wait until the rest of the story is heard before you condemn the family. Get lost cop-sucker.
A young adult was living with us when they accidently ate something they shouldn't have and immediately threw up. It really was one of those wacky accidents. Just to make sure, we called the hospital on-call nurse who assured us everything was fine and we all had a good laugh. Four days later, this adult called mama and told her the funny story. Mama freaked and called every agency under the sun. The cops and the health department called our house wanting to start a full blown investigation and make a home visit so I spent the whole afternoon talking them out of it. Then I let loose on stupid idiot moron mama. Did she really want to have this non-event turn into a 48 hour stay at the mental clinic and her little precious carry around a suicide attempt record forever or somehow get arrested? Sure, that'll look real good at the next college scholarship board and on every job application. And not to mention we'd be investigated, too. All over a minor split second oopsie that happened 4 days before, sigh. Some people are just too stupid.
“If they cant deal with conflict other than with lethal force, they dont belong on the force.”
Says the guy sitting at home, without any actual hard evidence of what happened, who just got done telling me that “lying” is basic for all police officers.
People with a pathology shouldn’t swing screwdrivers or post on internet forums.
Keith Vidal - the family has closed down his Facebook page but they missed this photo
“Your little jackboots never lie!!? Your little jackboots rages never get on tape by their own damn cameras!!?”
Calm down, a normal person might suspect that someone has an irrational hatred for police officers based on a post like this.
” I never said that the family is right here, they could be all full of it for all I know “
Then stop spamming me with your posts. Or share them on DU or on the Daily Paul where convicting police officers or George Zimmerman types in the media is actually encouraged. Here, amongst adults, we don’t emote over things we don’t actually have any hard evidence on, and we avoid irrational generalizations against Freepers in Law enforcement or their families.
