What Contemporary Music Do You Recommend?? Break Out Of The Classic Rock Rut!!
vanity | 7 Feb 2013 | Notary Sojac

Posted on 01/07/2014 7:02:12 AM PST by Notary Sojac

This thread had its genesis in this one -

Millenial's Music Taste (vanity). Whats wrong with your generation?

- where a few of us made the case for really good music being made in the 21st century by artists who aren't retreads from the boomer era or earlier. It's a mission of mine to try to get my fellow boomers to break that fixation with the "oldies station" and listen to some new stuff.

I plan to make the case for a few artists here, and hope that more Freepers will chime in.

Please do so!! Give us a little info about the contemporary artists you like, with an album or track recommendation.

My tastes run to bluegrass, blues, swing, and what's now called "Americana", but any genre is welcome here. Except techno. Post any dance/techno recommends and you'll earn the Sojac raspberry!

To kick off:

Eleni Mandell is, like many of my favorite artists, not easily slotted into a genre. She has done country, pop, straight ahead rock, and classic '40s style lounge singing. But in every style her hooks are memorable and her lyrics witty.

Recommended album to start with: Miracle of Five, tracks "Moonglow, Lamp Low" and "Somebody Else".

Chatham County Line is a bluegrass outfit out of North Carolina. Straight up, tight bluegrass harmonies with a minimum of twang.

Recommended album to start with: Speed of the Whippoorwill, title track and "Coming Home".

Dave Alvin was, with his brother Phil, a founding member of The Blasters, the greatest roots rock group you've never heard of. Although his career with that group goes back to the eighties, most of his good solo material is post-2000. Dave perfectly rides the boundary between garage rock and country, a real sweet spot for me.

Recommended album to start with: Blackjack David, tracks "Abilene" and "New Highway".

Its a matter of opinion, thats all. Can you understand that?

Are you able to get that through your head?

I like a huge range of music and I dislike a good deal of music. Can not stand poorly written lyrics, can not stand insipid musicians who think whatever drivel that comes out of their mouths “ educates “ the masses.

Have you ever sat down and read the lyrics from the Doors? The Moody Blues? Its moronic, heavily dated and laughable.

Thats my opinion. Thats all. Just as what you think about is just that, an opinion.

Interesting thread. I’ll enjoy poking around the songs/groups that get recommended. My musical tastes are ... different. In my 17k+ songs on my computer, I’ve got everything from Bagpipes, to Bluegrass, to Big Band, to Metal. Sometimes you get really interesting songs thrown together when I’m on a random walk.

Love Jack Johnson and Cake.

Been listening to Foster the People, 2 Door Cinema Club and forever a Strokes fanatic.

There is a interesting band (new to me) called Tame Impala and another called Foxygen worth giving a listen

So many bands people are listing as "contemporary" are over twenty years old. I find myself doing the same thing, thinking I'm hip to what the kids are listening to today because I love Weezer, but their biggest hit song "Buddy Holly" was released twenty freaking years ago! That makes me super old.

But anyway, contemporary or sorta contemporary stuff I'm listening to now:

not in the least. The subject is music, not some idiot like Pajama Boy. You are comparing apples to rocks

Not really. Music is reflective of a person's personal sense of style. It's part of their inner selves. A part of who they are. Same goes for the kind of car they drive and the type of clothes they wear. That is of course assuming you have a choice when it comes to the type of car you drive or clothes you wear. In any case, one just about always has a choice when it comes to what music they listen to.

I never accused you of being a liberal, politically. I just said some people are "musically liberal", and others "musically conservative", as in stick with what you got if it works and you like it.

“In short, if it works, don’t ‘fix’ it.”

The problem is, if you work at home a lot as I do, even the couple of hundred recordings I have from the 60’s and 70’s get boring if there is music playing all the time. Also, the modern reproduction equipment really lets you hear some of the mistakes and sloppiness of those early albums (some of the early Beatles albums - oh my). On the other hand, when you don’t hear an album like ‘Sticky Fingers’ for about five years, cuing it up is an absolute joy.

Most of my stuff is remastered and on mp3s. Sound quality is terrific to me.

My problem is a lot of it is TOO terrific. You can hear Paul McCartney’s bass go completely off the beat when he starts singing. Several of the early Who albums all sorts of studio noises. And on a lot of albums of that time, when you move it to higher quality digital, you can hear things like the singer taking a big gulp of air before beginning the next verse. Really odd, when I listened to the Beatles through one six inch oval speaker in my Dad’s car, they were perfect!

Several of the early Who albums all sorts of studio noises.

The most famous is Pete saying "I Saw You" to Keith at the end of "Happy Jack."

To me the 70's were a vast wasteland, music wise.I doubt that more than a dozen songs of my 5,000 song library (thank God for CD burners) are from the 70's.I certainly understand that many will disagree with me...perhaps even including you.

Thanks for the PING!

It’s a shame how some decide to age ugly. It’s ridiculous to think that popular music is worse or better at any particular age. Why would it be?

I mentioned maybe a dozen great bands, mostly Americana, on the previous thread.

Here are two of them again: Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers, Filligar, Red Wanting Blue.
