The SEC's Reign Of Dominance Is Far From Over

Many college football fans are thrilled that Florida State overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat Auburn in the last ever BCS National Championship. Much of that elation has little to do with Florida State itself. Rather, fans are just excited to see the SEC lose a title game.

An SEC team had won the seven previous championship games, a streak that confirmed the conference’s status as ruler of the keep. Yet on Monday night, the much-hated SEC finally lost a title shot. It took eight years, but a knight clad in garnet-and-gold slayed the dragon.

What’s your point? SC beat Missouri, beat Clemson, beat Central Florida, beat NC, beat Vandy, …..all teams who WON BOWL GAMES……to pull one result out like that is just absurd.

PAC 12 will be very good next season, and if Mariotta returns, as he says he will, Oregon will be Title contender.

The only stat that matters is 34-31.

Maybe Mason needed 300 yards for Auburn to have had a chance.

BTW, FSU dominated the second half. Maybe Auburn should have foregone the championship speech writing at halftime and instead concentrated on trying to win the game.

“Maybe Mason needed 300 yards for Auburn to have had a chance”

You are joking right? Number one Auburn was not the best team in the SEC, Alabama was. Alabama led the country in least points allowed until the Auburn game. They had 3 shutouts this year, with one of being against a high scoring team in Ole Miss. They shut out Ole Miss at Ole Miss. No other team did that this year. Alabama, although giving up a ton of yards to Auburn in the Iron still lost the game on a fluke play you see once in 50 years. Then against Oklahoma they had over 500 total offense, but pissed the game away with five uncharacteristic turnovers. I personally think their heart was never in the bowl game. They were also ranked #1 to start the year and remained #1 the entire year until the Auburn loss. Auburn on the the hand won half their games by less than a TD, with it taking a miracle fluke play to beat both Alabama and Georgia. FSU, with the exception of Clemson, beat no one of note the entire year. It does not impress me when a team runs up the score on not more than high schools in the ACC.

So what does all this blabbling about from me mean in the big picture? Well if Auburn could run at will against FSU and basically lead them the entire game, and if not for a fake punt at the end of the first half, and the score probably being 28-3 instead of 21-10, Auburn would have probably won the game going away because FSU would have been demoralized trailing 28-3. Instead FSU runs the fake punt and gets right back in the game.

Yes FSU won the game, but no way in hell were they better than Auburn, who had close game after close game in the SEC. I think if FSU were in the SEC they would have lost 4 games. You might think I’m crazy, but that’s how I see it.
SEC is still the top football conference in the country and will be for years to come. Auburn, Alabama, Texas A&M and Missouri could have very easily beat them if they were in the SEC.

The Auburn player was on the FSU player’s back. From what I saw the ball was about 6 feet in front of him. I don’t think the interference stopped him from making the catch. With that said, FSU still would have had another shot. Like I said, FSU showed up in the second half and Auburn didn’t. They deserve credit. They won it all.

I don’t understand how it’s a fluke to return a missed field goal but not a fluke to return a kick off. The kickoff was 3 feet into the end zone. The field goal try was 9 feet into the end zone. Either they’re both flukes or they’re not.

Also, the Auburn player had a camera stuck in his face as soon as he crossed the goal line. He immediately said that Malzahn told him to be ready to run it back.

“That’s absurd….first of all, the pass interference was on the last touchdown.”

You should watch the replay. There was no interference call on the last touchdown. ;-)

The interference was on the drive of the last touchdown….two plays before.

And it was a good call. ON the play itself, which was a catch, no interference indeed.

You don’t understand what the Auburn player’s off hand was doing…it was around the FSU players waste, the defenders left hand, not allowing him to make his cut. It was not the right hand over the top that was the call. There is language in the rule specifically for this off hand. Defenders sometimes get away with it, but it is interference.

Nobody except FR is questioning this call….for the most part.

I predict that now that we have a playoff starting in 2015, the SEC will have their football championships at a much lower rate.

To counter this, the SEC will institute a new rule on the BCS, enforcing the 3 our out of 4 playoff teams must, by rule, be SEC teams.

If this doesn’t pass the SEC will further lower academic standards.

Saban knew that if it went into O/T they were done with

I would dispute that, but we'll never know. Anyway, Auburn won, congratulations to them. They deserved it, because they never should have been in a position where luck became the deciding factor. They were though, and luck is a legitimate winning factor.

However, as I told my Auburn friends after both Georgia and Alabama had fallen, you can't depend on luck all the time. Sometimes you have to be good. In the FSU game, Auburn was good. But the luck had turned, and they weren't good enough.

I was pulling for Auburn, sorta, because while I am not an SEC fan, per se, hey, what the hell. More because I am a (state of) Alabama fan..

But I'm glad now that they lost. Why, you ask? Because it has shut them up about the Alabama game. When they bring it up, we bring up the bowl game. Very effective, really.

ROLL TIDE, ROLL!!!

I’m a huge SEC fan and naturally wanted Auburn to win. Like many others, I was getting kinda’ sick of Saban. But if Alabama had been playing FSU I would have rooted for them.

If Auburn bring up their “magic punt return” and you point out the bowl game, you KNOW they’ll just say “Oklahoma! Oklahoma! Oklahoma!”

On another note, Manzeil is going pro. That sucks! I hope Sumlin can prove the Aggies’ luck wasn’t all on Johnny Football. By the way, I always hated the Aggies until they got into the SEC.

I’m not really saying it was a bad call. I just thought the receiver probably wouldn’t have caught it anyway. But if the defender’s left hand was holding him then that explains why the throw was so far in front of the receiver. And Auburn definitely got away with a horse collar that would have had the same effect.

They came to play. And they almost pulled it off. But “almost” never counts. And nobody ever remembers who came in second.

Don’t care if they do. And they haven’t. Our seasonnended with auburn. We haven’t won since. Oklahoma was a meaningless game to us, as shown by the performance of the team.

Don’t get me wrong. Oklahoma came to play, and they deserved to win. they’re a great ball club, and quite possibly could have beaten Bama if the Tide had brought their A-game, but they didn’t. 1 interception, 3 fumbles, I forget how many sacks. that’s not regular Bama play.

But the championship was an important game tht meant something. And it was their last game of the year. It’s always bad to go out a loser. Just ask me, I can tell you.

anyway, I can’t speak for the Auburn fans elsewhere, but around my place of business, they’re being rather quiet, and I like it like that.

As for being a SEC fan, if that’s your thing, go for it. I’m a Bama fan, pure and simple. I root for the SEC only insofar as it helps BAMA, hurts Notre Dame, or at least doesn’t interfere with Bama.

Yep, the left hand was holding him, impeding his progress, and that was why it was called. Nothing the defender did with his torso or right arm/hand was a foul.

I know all about being a loser. I’m an Arkansas and Tennessee fan. I’m convinced Arkansas hired the wrong guy. And Tennessee got their fourth choice. I’m not sure I’ll ever get be excited about either in my lifetime.

While not a SEC fan in particular, I’m glad when they win, of course, I was very much a Tennessee fan, considering them a much greater opponent than Auburn. A lot of Bama fans from my generation felt that way.

And then along comes Phil Fulmer. Rats.
