Young teens aren’t exactly embracing the government’s Let’s Move mantra, the latest fitness data suggest.

Only 1 in 4 U.S. kids aged 12 to 15 meet the recommendations—an hour or more of moderate to vigorous activity every day.

The results are based on about 800 kids who self-reported their activity levels and had physical exams as part of the 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey.

Government researchers won’t call the results disappointing, but lead author Tala Fakhouri of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “There’s always room for improvement.” …

It seems the 12 to 15 year old kids are as fit than the female recruits in the Marine Corps?!

Kids now can scale a wall with their thumbs. No need for the rest of that stuff.

Homeschoolers get plenty of play and exercise time. It’s the children stuck in govt indoctrination centers who aren’t allowed exercise time.

Meanwhile, guys in their 50s and 60s work out in the gym every day......you don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.

Good point, if we lower the bar for these kids they’ll all pass.

The kids self reported their activity....heh...heh...heh

I'll bet 90% fibbed....

Why??? I see these kids coming home from school. Maybe one out of 30 is fat. Of course, the fattest person is the teacher...

Nonsense.

It’s up to the parents to encourage the exercise, not the schools.

I’m sure some home-schooled kids don’t get enough exercise and some public school kids get plenty.

I'll inform my 15yo of that when she comes inside where she was long enough to deposit her book bag and put a leash on the dog..................

Exactly. My 15yo (yes she is that old already) sometimes spends too much time outside (just kidding.) Yesterday she was disappointed she had only 10 minutes to play outside with the puppy before she was picked up for dance classes, the 2 she takes as well as the 2 where she assists with the little ones.

I’m sure some home-schooled kids don’t get enough exercise and some public school kids get plenty.

You are correct, but don't try convincing any of the home school fanatics around here of that fact.

Happy New Year,Gabz, and it’s hard to believe your daughter is 15. Where does the time go?

Nice to hear she is involved with dance. How nice that must be for you, watching her perform. My grand daughter is a runner,a very competitive one,and off to college next fall.

Non home-schooled kids can get enough exercise and we have just given two good examples.

Ciao !

I see this data, but when the Obamaphone driven flash mob hits the local for mall for the occasional loot-n-shoot, they still show decent short distance speed.

Happy New Year, to you my dear!

We do love watching her perform and she really enjoys it.

Is your grandaughter planning on continuing her running in college?

Yes she is,God willing. She’s very good-— as was her mother(my daughter).

I ran once to get out of the rain. :-)

Snark!

You, as well as everyone else on this board, knows that schools are limiting play and exercise time because of liabilities and political correctness. You also knew I meant in the context of schools. But, yet you chose to be snarky.

I agree. Parents should encourage exercise. I also know that schools (which is what I was talking about) are limiting exercise during school hours and limiting the type of exercise.

You refer to schools as "gov't indoctrination centers" where children are "stuck" and yet find fault with my snark? That's rich.
