Dozens Injured Throwing Boiling Water Into Winter Air
New York Magazine ^ | 1/10 | Joe Coscarelli

Posted on 01/09/2014 11:07:05 AM PST by nickcarraway

The meteorologist's trick of tossing a pot of scalding water into the air in subzero temperatures to watch it freeze — a big hit on YouTube these past few days — has resulted in at least 50 people burning themselves, according to admissions (often with photographic evidence) on social media. If we've learned anything this week, it's that urine is far safer and still gets the job done.

....you don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows...”

sorry I just couldn’t resist that

Dumb.

I’ve done this and managed to NOT burn myself.

Then again, I’m not an idiot either and didn’t have to have anyone else hold muh’ beer...

It wouldn’t have to be boiling to freeze before it hit the ground.

For a safer, but cool, experiment, blow soap bubbles into the subzero air...

That first sentence in my post was not clear.

You can see the freezing effect without risking it with hot water.

I guess going from boiling to ice is more dramatic.

At a certain temperature doesn’t boiling water thrown into the air flash ( that may not be the right term) to vapor, therefore producing snow not ice?

I would think it would be the steam that would do that...
Now, if the vapor pressure around the water were suddenly lower - yeah, it would flash to steam and then freeze.

Yep. I know. For some added flair on the soap bubble thing... Have a cigar going when you blow the bubbles.

Or... For a bit of “Ewwwww” factor... Pee off your second story deck when it’s -28F...

That was a trick we’d show “newbies” up at Ft. Wainwright when I was there. Take a hot cup of coffee and throw it out the window on the second floor of the hanger. Vapor. No brown spots on the snow down below. However, it was not only very cold, the air was very dry.

Ya think maybe local TV news stations should quit repeatedly showing the clip and saying “Wow, this is really cool! But don’t try it at home!” ??
