I don't understand something about the Chris Cristy/bridge thing. The lanes were closed supposedly to get revenge on the mayor of the small town for not endorsing Cristy. But HOW was that supposed to hurt him? Was it believed that the citizens of that town would blame the mayor for the traffic mess? One would assume that they knew that highway problems would not be his fault. It seems like vandalizing your next door neighbor's car to get revenge on the man across the street. What am I missing here?
Christie’s bud, the one that took the 5th, was at the bridge at 7 am on the first day it was shut down.Would be great to have a pic to see who he was with...and if they resembled Cheshire cats.
It wasn’t like he shut down the government like Obama did so what’s the beef.
Having worked in local government you would be surprised at what people call about and think their taxes pay for. Here are a few examples and my responses:
Request: city workers to come over to their house and clean up the tumbleweeds from the last wind storm.
Response: We don’t provide workers to clean up private property.
Request: Come spray the ants in my yard and I know the city sprays for them.
Response: The city does not spray for ants and this is a private property issue. I also gave her the number of several exterminators from the phone book
Request: Storm water runoff coming down my driveway
Response: Water runs down hill
Request: trim their hedges
Response: We don’t provide workers to clean up private property.
Request: the city shut off their water on Friday and they couldn’t pay their bill because city hall was closed on Fridays.
Response: Water is shut off on Tuesdays and only after you are 2 months in arrears. There is a also a drop box for your payment that is checked hourly during regular office hours/days. The city created a new ordinance that provided 5 extra grace period days because of the 4-10 work week.
Request: How come you changed the lane striping and signage on my street. It’s confusing
Response: All of the city striping and signage must conform to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and if you have ever driven in (name the city) it is the same there.
Of course this is when they take the time to call city hall. It is worse trying to explain to the mayor or elected officials at a city council meetings these same responses and having to cite to them the ordinances, resolutions, and others laws that staff is required to abide/enforce, some of which were enacted by them!
I have been making that same comment on the various Christie threads.
I think I have an answer.
The ‘geniuses’ at the DNC who are prepping for Hillary’s Prez Run were worried about Christie running.
They saw the reaction of the public to Obama closing various public landmarks, and noticed the ‘right’ using it to attack Obama (which makes sense, btw)
So.... they copied that premise and tried to use it to attack Christie. Even though it doesn’t apply.
The idea that Christie or one of his aids could simply arrange to have a major construction crew show up to close the bridge, based on a political whim, seems very ludicrous.
Major construction such as lane closures on a bridge are planned and scheduled far in advance of the actual closure, and their had to be some kind of repair needed, else it would not have even been considered.
Back to your point. The only ‘way’ that I can see people blaming the Mayor (when his office wasn’t even responsible for the lane closure) is because that’s what the media ‘reporters’ wrote in their articles. Other than that, the ‘idea’ has no standing at all.
The only thing I think of, during a traffic jam, is the other idiots around me who try to force their way 'ahead' in traffic (switching from lane to lane), and who then slow down and 'rubberneck' while passing the construction work. Which is what most accidents in traffic jams are caused by.
I have inlaws that work for a city. They have stories.
The last link of I35E in St. Paul was graded and ready to pave when nearby citizens raised such a stink that it sat like that for a good 10 years. Finally a compromise was made. They paved and opened the freeway but set the speed limit at 45mph.
A local radio personality calls it the “practice freeway”.
I believe you are correct as “Monkey see, Monkey do”, and “Projection” are quite common Leftist/Democrat tendencies.
I think it was all about business, no on/off ramps working without huge delays=no shopping or gas or restaurant traffic, etc.
And that would be true. That reason was explicit. The mayor did not endorse Christie. THEREFORE the bridge was restricted and tied up. That sort of politics is SOP in certain venues like DC(local), Chicago, Maryland, Nevada, Cakifornia, DC(fedgov), St Louis, Kansas City, and a few etcs.
The G W Bridge is a huge revenue producer. Over 100,000 vehicles cross it daily taking in a reported $1 million a day. With New Jersey politics the way they are the somebodys gotta have a hand in it’s operation and share in the revenue. Very likely Fort Lee pols have a big share of this in city and their pocket revenues.
That is a non sequitur. What does closing the bridge have to do with closing the lanes (see the question asked in the main post).
Sorry let me try that again:
That is a non sequitur. What does closing the bridge have to do with the non endorsement? (see the question asked in the main post).
This whole episode has revealed Krispy for what he is: a trojan horse from the RATS..
The mayor didn’t endorse as he was told to do so he was served up some annoyance for his town. What is to understand? It is crude quid payback. Politicians in places like New Jersey do that all the time. It is SOP. It only becomes petty and stupid when it gets national publicity which Christie did not expect because such things are never publicized by MSM because they are so totally normal in machine states and cities. Christie did not take account of his position as a Contender in 2016 and the effect that fact would have on MSM. That shows that Christie is not only an unsavory big government coercive pol but not terribly bright also.
What is to understand?
How did it hurt the mayor?
