Petition to White House Calls on Public Schools to Recognize Muslim Holidays

A petition on White House.gov is calling for President Obama to support an effort to encourage public schools to recognize Muslim holidays on their official school calendars.

The petition was put on the "We the People" site last month by a group of Muslim students from Virginia and has garnered about 28 thousand signatures so far.

"With the growing population of Muslims in he United States of America (including first, second, third and fourth generation) we believe it is high time that Muslim holidays are recognized by schools throughout this nation," reads the petition text.

Christmas has long been a secular holiday. There are no state or federal holidays recognizing religious holidays.

Some districts' calendars align with Christian Holy Week, others do not.

According to wikipedia:

There are two official holidays in Islam: Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha.

• Eid Al-Fitr, also called Feast of Breaking the Fast, is celebrated at the end of Ramadan (a month of fasting). This is a day when Muslims around the world show a common goal of unity.
• Eid Al-Adha is where Muslims usually sacrifice an animal and distribute its meat among family, friends and the poor. It honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his young first-born son Ishmael.

So this petition is for a holiday for Muslim unity. This is utterly unacceptable.

Of course I am sure Obama thinks he would just wave his scepter and poof.... It is law...
