From the website of the FBI:

“Charles Spencer “Charlie” Chaplin (1889-1971) was a comic actor, movie director, and one of the founders of United Artists Pictures, a major Hollywood film studio. This release consists of two types of files, one involving a White Slave Traffic Act (or interstate prostitution) investigation and a domestic security file concerning Chaplin’s ties to communist organizations in the U.S. The dates range from 1922 to 1978.”

His politics were of the naive ‘Peace on Earth’ variety. HE never joined any communist party as far as I know.

A PLACE IN HISTORY: Federal Hall on Wall Street was the site of George Washington's inauguration. A statue of the first president stands in front of the building.

Barack Obama's politics are of the naive "Equality on Earth" variety. HE never associates with any radical leftist or Islamic organizations as far as I know.

Not all communists are actual members of the Communist Party. Some wisely prefer to keep a low profile.

>>but felt the government's effort to suppress the ideology was an unacceptable infringement of civil liberties

Communism and Nazism (another political ideology) were/are both reprehensible and many millions have died in the push for those systems.

His politics were of the naive ‘Peace on Earth’ variety.

So he's rubbing elbows with groups and individuals who supported communist mass murderers like Mao and Stalin?

"The Wall Street bombing occurred at 12:01 pm on Thursday, September 16, 1920, in the Financial District of New York City. The blast killed 38 and seriously injured 143.[1]:160-161 The bombing was never solved, although investigators and historians believe the Wall Street bombing was carried out by Galleanists (Italian anarchists), a group responsible for a series of bombings the previous year.

The attack was related to postwar social unrest, labor struggles and anti-capitalist agitation in the United States."

Chaplin was not a political figure and did not engage in political activism. His political statements come from interviews asking him about why he was being harassed. The U.S. government’s refusal to re admit him to the country in the early 1950s was embarrassing. He spent the rest of his life in England making films not agitating for political change (which he never did).

Brecht and Eisler? They were major creative figures of the time. Orson Welles associated with them to. Was he a communist?
