On Thursday, Major League Baseball formally approved the use of instant replay for the 2014 season. Under the new system, managers will have one challenge they can use. If their challenge is successful, managers will be able to retain that challenge and use it one more time during the game for a maximum of two challenges per game.
After the start of the seventh inning, the crew chief of the game may choose to use instant replay on any reviewable call even if a manager is out of challenges, according to Major League Baseball's announcement:

I’d like to the the balls and strikes digitized. You could do it with lasers. The only wrinkle is sizing each batter waist to shoulder.

Hate it too. Is the “neighborhood” play at 2nd on double plays going to be out now? Are we looking at more broken ankles and legs to middle infielders?
Are they going to look at whether the ball was moving around in the glove to determine possession like the NFL on pass receptions which has become inconsistent?

I guess the only good thing about this is they limit it to two challenges (4 max), so hopefully it won’t do too much to the game.
That’s good. I’d still rather see the umpires get together first and try to get the call correct.
Spring Training should be fun as they iron out the kinks.
And possibly just the availability of challenges will keep the umps a bit more on their toes.
They gotta stop letting guys take so long between pitches. If 20 seconds pass, call a ball.
I like it. But also the batter. Now it's step out, adjust gloves, scratch whatever, flip the bat, paw the dirt, endless adjusting position in box, pointing bat at pitcher, spit a few times and then get ready. When the pitcher is ready, he can pitch.
There's a significant amount of baseball in it, what with the '27 Yanks, Ruth's 60 HR, and so forth.
Bryson says the average game in '27 took less than 90 minutes to play. He specifically sites a Yankees double-header that was played in under 2:45.
Absolutely, batters shouldn’t be given an unlimited number of “time outs” anymore, that’s just as bad as the pitchers taking too long.
What’s important is getting the call correct, but the replay system has to be quick enough. The review should be limited to 90 seconds, like in the NFL.
It shouldn’t be too hard to fit everybody with those little targets they use to electronically overlay cartoon type characters onto human body movements. Then they could give the plate umpire a stool and he could sit twelve feet behind home and read novels ‘til a decision is needed.
Teams will be allowed to have a club employee monitoring video and communicating with the manager whether or not to challenge. Both the home and road teams must have equal access to all video, but no additional electronic equipment will be allowed. Camera angles in all parks will also be standardized.
Refs and umps are very different, at least presently. Umpires have control in baseball not so much in football. Football is more like the inmates running the prison. When’s the last time you saw a ref run a coach in football?
No reason an official in the booth can’t review questionable calls throughout the game without putting the burden on the managers.
I recall him saying at one point that part of his tape review for game prep was reviewing the ump to get a handle on the size and shape of the ump’s strike zone. And the fact that so many umps have “their” strike zone rather than THE strike zone is often listed as part of the problem with MLB officiating. So I’d guess he’d come out for things that ended custom strike zones, unless he likes the competitive advantage given to pitchers that review ump tapes.
He beat a strike-zone camera to pieces as he was walking away from an at-bat.
(So I’d guess he prefers Pitchers who review the calls have an advantage. Part of the game.)
