'Got land? Thank an Indian' shirts hot commodity after controversy, seller says

The Manitoba man who started selling clothing that says "Got land? Thank an Indian" has had interest from potential customers all around the world after a Grade 8 student wearing one of his sweaters made headlines this week.

Tenelle Starr, 13, wore a pink hoodie bearing the slogan to her Saskatchewan school, but was told to take it off because it could offend someone. After a meeting between her parents and school officials, the matter was cleared up and she was permitted to wear the sweater again.

But the story made headlines, and now Jeff Menard says he's getting requests from around the globe.

On his Facebook page, people from other provinces, as well as from far away as New Zealand, are eager to get their hands on the shirts, hoodies and even baby bibs.

"It's going like crazy," Menard said Friday. He has been selling the shirts through his Facebook page, but said he's working to get a website.

He said he heard the phrase while on a visit to the U.S. In 2012, he created the shirt.

"I knew this would make our people proud to wear something like this," the member of the Pine Creek First Nations said. "It put a smile on my face."

He said he sold more than 1,000 shirts before this week, but now he has more requests than he's been able to keep track of, and the calls keep coming in.

"I had people calling me from Baltimore," he said. "Who knows what the final numbers are going to be."

Thank a Chinese. The DNA tests show the Indians are just Chinese who went out for some General Tso’s Chicken and took a wrong turn.

Indians did plenty of wheeling and dealing of their own contrary to the popular fantasy that they were ignorant primitives who didn’t know what ownership meant.

RIGHT!!! Like the Indians spontaneously sprung from the earth in America and Canada (or the North American Continent if you will), and God knows there were never any territorial wars or slaves among the Indians and they were all wonderful stewards of the Earth and, sorry I have to go puke now.

BTW somebody needs to ask where the indians got the land. In many if not most cases they got it by killing everyone on it.

Saginaw (MI) is an Ojibiwa word meaning "Where the Sauk were. They weren't there because the Ojibiwa killed them and took the land.

I am Ani-Yun-Wiya...(look it up if you don’t know)

The saying exactly true pertaining to my people.
We had adapted very well with the Europeans and then the Americans...My ancestors even saved the reputation of one of the white mans heroes and future president, only to have him
turn and treat us like dirt...

The saying is very accurate.....

The Indians took the land from the Clovis people who were here before them, and there’s strong evidence that there was a group of caucasoid people in North America who preceded them.

This crap is just so stupid, and I say that as someone who’s got Indian, European, and African ancestry.

I think I will thank God who created the heavens and the earth instead. People come and go. Strong overtake the weak all the time.

“they were all wonderful stewards of the Earth”

They were nomads and when their crap stunk so bad they couldn’t stand it, they moved to a new location!

How about just thanking someone long dead who used to carry a spear? Everyones got ancestors who used to, and the ones who figured out the next snazzy killing stick usually got a leg up on everyone else until the next bright killologist came along.

It’s the Human Condition.

"Got land? Thank an Indian"

Dot or feather?

Seriously though, which Indian should I thank, as they were so busy take it away from each other before Columbus arrived.

Try reading a little history...Only some of the western tribes were nomadic in the sense that they followed the migration of buffalo and moved to sheltered valleys during winter...
Most eastern tribes had lands that they had lived on for thousands of years BEFORE Europeans came here...The same lands....
