This thread contains talk about Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit - read at your risk if you don't want any spoiler.
Instead of making a movie based "Without Remorse" - probably the best Tom Clancy novel, we get this modern post 9-11 action movie which has every action movie element from the last 20 years.
When Hollywood uses the term reboot, it means that they have no real ideas, so what they do is buy the rights to the name of the main character and use it for some trite, clichéd screenplay.
The story involves Jack Ryan who enlists in the Marines in 2001 after the 9-11 attack only to become a hero in the Afghanistan Theatre of Operation. He then goes to work for the CIA to monitor terror funds after telling his CIA recruiter, played by Kevin Costner, that he's upset over waterboarding and rendition.
However, ten years later America's enemies are not Islamists, but those nasty Russians who plot the destruction of the US economy (no thanks, we doing a better job on our own).
The central city of the terror plot is Dearborn Michigan where, I guess, the main threat comes from the Russian Orthodox Church goers. I was always under the impression that Dearborn was one of the Holy Sites of Islam.
Not even a grown up and very attractive Keira Knightley is worth the admission to this film. There was a scene where Costner steals a dog to meet Ryan in the streets of Moscow. Even the dog is embarrassed to be in this movie.
Then for the last 20 minutes of this film, your intelligence is pretty much insulted. There is very little good about this movie, even the soundtrack is subpar.
Anything with Kevin Costner in it is a no go anyway.
I intended to go to this movie tonight until I read a critique about it that pretty much mirrored your review.
Attack of the pod people. Jack has been replaced with a metro-sexual leftist clone.
It’s getting to the point where going to the movies is a no-go. Too many people are on the no-go list.
Ah, the cognitive dissonance of Hollyweird.
What about Hatfields and McCoys?
I’m not sure what you mean.
You never saw it? Was all the rage for a while. Costner played the Hatfield patriarch, I think. Unless I imagined him in the role.
Just read “Threat Vector.” Typically great Clancy. I’d bet he’s spinning in his grave over this hollywood crud!
Yeah, this is nuts. Next movie, the world will be held hostage by Amish extremists from Indiana.
I read most of the Jack Ryan books and have decided to steer clear of this movie because the character in this is a RINO (Ryan In Name Only). I had hopes for Rainbow Six and Without Remorse as film adaptations, but decided I was happy with the books after seeing what happened when The Sum of All Fears was adapted for the big screen.
Oh well. I’ll be saving gas, ticket, and popcorn money.
My wife and I enjoyed the movie.
From the ads, it looks contrived and overall, gay.
Pass. Even when it’s on cable I’ll avoid it.
TV show? I’m always late to the party on the popular ones.
Gee, what reboot will Chris Pine star in next?
Wow! You’re very generous IMHO in your reviews.
This must stink to high heaven.
Yup, it was on History channel. Received record ratings, or so I heard, if memory serves.
Sigh. I had a feeling the Russians were the enemy.
Porky’s? Maybe Ace Ventura?
I got a gift pack of 5 movie tix as a BDay gift; 5 months later, I still have 3 of them (wasted 2 on Anchorman 2). Hollywood is incapable of producing anything good (or midling) to see.
Can’t wait for the “Point Break” remake, amongst others...
Luke Skywalker in Star Wars 7.
“Even the dog is embarrassed to be in this movie.”
LOL, thanks for your review/warning.
It sounds truly dreadful.
Holding it back for a January release sounds like they knew they had a turkey on their hands.
Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids... as wasting millions and millions on liberal agenda BS flicks is for Hollywood--
Gadzooks, didn't I just say that... on another thread?
Gee, Bendy... It must be déjà vu all over again!
Let us start over here:
Re: Gee, what reboot will Chris Pine star in next
Well, he sure as hell ain't playing me... in Futurama: The Re-bot Re-boot
No, I am... and it is about time for my comeback!

“Costner played the Hatfield patriarch, I think.”
Was it him, I can’t remember. I do know Powers Boothe was in it.
It was so good, hubby and I watched some re-broadcast (of a number of episodes) that actually had one of those super-imposed “coming soon” logos for another show in the corner of the screen THE WHOLE TIME.
Maybe we’ll get to see it again in better conditions one day.
“Next movie, the world will be held hostage by Amish extremists from Indiana.”
Don’t give them any ideas!
It makes you think though....what low tech device would these Amish terrorist use in their effort to force us all to live the simple life, as they do?
I saw it yesterday, I thought it was ok too. We finally had a day where the temp was under 90, so we went to see it.
That would be ****ing hilarious if it was a reboot, which it’s not. (the PREQUELS SHOULD be rebooted BTW, they could hardly have been worse).
Mark Hamil as “Luke Prime” goes back in time to to Episode 3 to stop a Sith Lord with poor motivations who has also gone back in time.
Thanks to the Sith Lord, Obi Wan dies fighting Vader. Vader, who is uninjured, overthrows Palpatine and turns Yoda to the dark side to be his apprentice.
Luke impersonates Obi-wan and teaches Pine the ways of the force before being mauled to death by a CGI womp rat.
The New Death Star, which was built several years too early and looks like an apple store, destroys Naboo instead of Alderaan. Jar Jar Binks becomes a bitter smuggler, taking over the Han Solo role, even hooking up with Leia (Jennifer Lawrence) instead of Han.
Some Wookies make a cameo, they all have multiple piercings.
Luke 2.0 is inexplicably promoted to Admiral in charge of the rebel fleet and dies kamikazeing his flagship into a Super Star Destroyer.
Leia, with the help of Lando (Johnny Lee Miller), who has inexplicably become White, defeats Vader (still played with negative aplomb by Hayden Christensen) after insisting NO THAT’S NOT TRUE, THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE, when he tells her he’s her father, and then throws a heavily tattooed Darth Yoda down the Death Star reactor shaft.
And that’s it, no scenes in between for character development or anything like that! Cha-ching, blockbuster! Your welcome, Disney. ;D
You’re missing a poodle.
With the womp rat being played by the powerfully charismatic Channing Tatum, who has to be in every mother****ing movie today.
You ain’t kidding.
IMDB has him in 5 2014 films, though 2 only as a voice actor (1 still filming, 2 completed, 1 in post production). 22 Jump street is coming soon, yes 22 Jump Street.
And EIGHT projects “in development” (details only on IMDbPro).
This is the second time Hollywood assclowns have made the enemy white guys instead of raggers in a Clancy vehicle
Sum of All Fears
We live in a Soviet disinformation era
Or what about almost dead white guy in windshield
Black lunatic woman in real life is culprit
In movie its a wigger(sorry mod...tell me a better word I’ll use it) played by Men’s Suvari
The original trailer, which highlighted Keira Knightly, was so poorly received it was pulled and re-cut a week later.
I thought the second trailer was even worse than the first one.
I’ll still go.
After seeing Knightly in “Pride and Prejudice,” I’ll be hooked on that young lady for life.
Wyatt Earp....yes I know Tombstone was better....Kimer versus Beihn.....perfect
Field of Dreams?
He has some stinkers though to be sure
He’s Californian but acts laconic southern...
To each his own I guess....
I just read a long article in GAME INFORMER magazine about the demise of the Lucas Arts video game company, and what yu wrote was a pretty good synopsis of it.
The first film was quite good.
By film number two we have a corrupt CIA and a remorseful Jason Bourne who needs to apologize to everyone.
And, of course, by film number three, water boarding and CIA trainees doing practice assassinations on hooded and shackled victims.
Sounds like the "new" Jack Ryan gave up before the movie even started.
Some actors I can’t stand because of their politics, but this is one I can’t stand simply because he cannot act whatsoever. Bland, pretty boy who has the presence and charisma of whipped cream. Chris Pine is almost as bad, and he will never be Kirk (Shatner would’ve slapped the crap out of him). They might as well have cast Hayden Christensen or that Fast & Furious guy who just died. So many movies and tv shows these days have this type of actor that is completely indistinguishable from another. Remember when they used to have stars that actually stood out and were different ? I miss that... a lot.
Droning voice with no inflections. Much like Robert Mitchum who was also over-rated, IMO.
Yup, it was definitely Costner! I’m not the best with actor names (or I’m indifferent to it, at least), but I double checked. It was indeed great. Probably the only show I’ve bothered to watch in years.
Oh, I liked Mitchum. He was excellent at projecting menace behind a laconic façade. I think my favorite film of his was the original “Cape Fear.”
Pushing a film's release from Christmas to January is Hollywood's way of telling us that it's a stinker and they know it. January is where movies go to die a quick death.
As did my wife and I - guess I'm just not as discerning of a consumer as the rest of our FReeper brethren.
Agree completely that Without Remorse was the best or tied-for-the-best Clancy. So strange though. Clancy suggests in Red October that Christopher Reed is the only choice for Ryan, yet Hollywood continues 1) to come up with utter losers in the role (including Harrison Ford!) and then 2) to cartoonize them (remember Alec Baldwin?). And William Dafoe as John Clark? Please.
That shows you that Hollywood ran out of ideas and inspiration generations ago. Now they’ve resorted to using a character and storyline from an old TV show. When I read the FR headline, I thought they were talking about a new videogame.
By the way, to all you gamers out there, Call Of Duty Ghosts is amazing! It’s worth the 60 bucks. It has levels and levels on top of levels. Just don’t get lost in it.
I should have made my post more clear. I was thinking about that TV show “24”. The character was Jack Bauer. But he was still based on the Tom Clancy hero Jack Ryan. In my opinion, “Executive Orders” was Clancy’s best novel. His opus and his greatest literary achievement. According to the conspiracy theorists, “they” took him out because he knew too much.
That's because they're homophobic ... unlike Moslems, you know.
