Today is the day many chose to remember and honor the work of Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. King inspired many to work for legal and societal change in a nonviolent way. I think if he were alive today, Mr. King would be called and Uncle Tom F$$%gt on Twitter. Many young people know he was of great benefit to the way race was perceived by both black and white, but most have either not been taught how he did it, or don't have respect for the methods used. Someone more attuned to today's world would be Malcolm X, a muslim convert who was fine with sponsoring a more violent reaction to the open racism of his day. I can easily imagine Piers Morgan interviewing someone like Malcolm. Waxing in prosaic, unctuous, tones, the tones of one who expects to lose everything and applaud the pillaging techniques of his tormentors.
I can imagine many people who should have their own day, and not just in politics either. What about you? In a serious or non-serious way. Who do you think has been overlooked or greatly misunderstood in reference to their value in American society.
Amen!
First year Baby Boomer here.
Restore the rightful Birthdays of Presidents Washington and Lincoln.
Washington: February 22
Lincoln: February 12
From memory without checking.
There is an old story, unverifiable, that at certain key points in Washingtons first term, he was visited and advised by a Winged Angel of God. George was told this new colony would survive, thrive and expand. This new land would become a leader of and partner to the rest of the world. The new land will remain a leading force for many generations, and will be tested in each generation. This comes from one of Washingtons memoirs.
Nelson Day!?
Winnie and Nelson Day!
I smiled and reminded him why the P.O. was shut down...
He's an oilfield hand by his coveralls, and for those of us in the patch, it's just another day...
But who better to oversee the implementation of and expansion of such policies than one whose family ties to the institution would be either buying or selling an ocean away?
Winnie and Nelson Day? Why not. We can walk around with car tires around our necks, twinkler lights wrapped around the tires will simulate those burning necklaces so popular with Kenyans.
Here are some quotes to provide a taste of his political philosophy.
Prosperity is only an instrument to be used, not a deity to be worshiped. Coolidge was a very wise and practical man, especially for a polititian.
I think we need to have a national “I’d hit that” day. Sort of like Sadie Hawkins day, but in reverse.
I can easily imagine MLK leading a “Justice for Trayvon” march today.
Dittos. It's easy for me because my own birthday is one of those. I remember as a child I never got a Birthday Card on my birthday because mail never ran that day.
Now, neither gets even a mention on most calendars. Just a coupla dead white guys.
There’s something about a man who does not use the office of president for vain and self-serving purposes. That humility is in short supply from our elected leaders today.
