Cops bloodied an 84-year-old man and put him in the hospital Sunday when he jaywalked at an Upper West Side intersection and didnt appear to understand their orders to stop, witnesses said.
Kang Wong was strolling north on Broadway and crossing 96th Street at around 5 p.m., when an officer told him to halt because he had walked against the light.
Police were targeting jaywalkers in the area following the third pedestrian fatality this month around West 96th Street.
Wong, who lives a block away, appeared to not understand the cop, the witnesses said.
The guy didnt seem to speak English. The cop walked him over to the Citibank near the northeast corner of 96th and Broadway, said one witness, Ian King, a Fordham University law student.
[The officer] stood him up against the wall and was trying to write him a ticket. The man didnt seem to understand, and he started walking away.
The cop tried to pull him back, and thats when he began to struggle with the cop, said King, 24. As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere.
Wong was left bleeding and dazed with cuts to his face.

Geez, the guy could just be senile.
——Mayor de Blasios spokesman, Phil Walzak, said Sunday, We wont sit by while lives are lost and families are torn apart. These latest crashes underscore the urgent need to make our streets safer, which is why we are moving decisively to enact Vision Zero.-——
How Orwellian ....
Uppity chinaman. Now he knows better. Bow down before your masters.
Wish there was video of this event. A lot of things could be in play here, at least to the point of the old guy getting bloodied up.
It’s certainly possible the old timer wasn’t paying attention and was in risk of getting “Froggered” when the first officer intervened. Likewise, even if he didn’t speak English, the guy should have been aware enough to know when a cop starts writing you a ticket, you don’t wander off (makes me think the old guy might not be all there in the head anymore).
At the same time, unless Kang Wong is the great-grandson of Kwai Chang Kaine, I’m not seeing why you’d need multiple officers to restrain an 84 year old man, much less have a scuffle that leaves his neck covered in blood.
It will be interesting to see if any passersby recorded this on their phones or what not.
Does there exist even one cop there, who sees the irony in beating the crap out of someone who was jaywalking, because they want to somehow reduce the toll of jaywalking?
Probably but a mute and deaf chinaman with dementia might not.
This is why in revolutions, police are killed first.
Obviously not or did you not read the story?
Hey, this was obviously a case of “tough love.”
The cops were simply trying to beat some sense into the old man — and to do this, they first had to beat some of his brains out! /sarc
Let me know when your 84 year old grandfather gets beaten by a cop. Or is it only old "Chinamen" who deserve a beating...?
84 year old people should be treated with respect. They may not be able to see, hear, or think clearly.
I don’t want to live in a world like this. I will resist heartless, impersonal, heavy handed government at every turn. A small government conservative can do no less. Small government means a weaker, less pervasive government. Small government means bigger individuals. Bigger individuals means more personal responsibility. Responsibility to take care of the people around us.
Jaywalking laws are designed to protect people, ensure safety, and make society better.
How does jacking up, beating up and ticketing an old man do any of that? Was he jay walking? Yup. If safety and a better society is the goal, and there are a crowd of cops around, get the guy safely across the street. Isn’t that the job? Isn’t the job to keep people safe? Or is the job taking money from old men, antagonizing citizens and beating the crap out them? Is the job handing out sanction or preserving life? What is the purpose of cops, traffic laws, courts, judges? Tell me, what is the purpose?
Is it to better society? Or are these laws just designed to flex municipal power? I can tell you what the purpose of these laws are. The purpose of these laws is whatever we make of them. Which do you choose? Safety and well being of society, or just flexing the muscles of city hall?
At least he didn’t have an old dog with him. No, he shouldn’t have resisted but then the cop should never have beat him. The cops should have been out arresting murderers, drug dealers and rapists rather than bothering jaywalkers. But, hey, the odds of going home safe tonight is much better accosting jaywalkers.
Yo Chinaman. NYC has a liberal Democrat mayor now. Sux 2 b u.
An hour later they beat him up again.
No, that would be me.
How about, if they are going to stand around in crowds downtown that instead of antagonizing people they contribute to safety.
They could do this with a servants heart, educating and helping. But educating, helping and spreading cheer is not what cops do. Although educating, helping and spreading cheer would save pedestrian lives you can’t swagger around intimidating people while spreading good will. City hall won’t have that. The peasants must be reminded of who is in charge. The peasants must obey!
