Indiana police chief running for sheriff accidentally shoots himself for SECOND time in career
Daily Mail ^ | January 21, 2014 | LUKE GARRATT

Police Chief David Counceller's 40-caliber Glock handgun accidentally discharged last Saturday while he was at Wulff's gun shop examining a handgun similar to the one he carries - he shot himself in the leg.

Counceller, 60, who was off duty at the time, said: 'I need to pay more attention. I know what the dangers are. It was pure carelessness on my part.'

-snip-

But he said he sees the accident as an opportunity in his run ahead of May's primary. He said: 'If anyone says this could never happen to them, they’re mistaken.'

'You have to keep your guard up at all times. Some candidates are out there doing things for kids to try to get elected. 'Me, I shoot myself. What a way to get publicity.'

Nobody ‘accidentally’ shoots themselves or anybody else. There’s a whole lot of improper gun handling that goes on before the weapon ‘accidentally’ discharges.

This guy is a disgrace as a gun man.

14 1/2 months in the ‘Nam, in the field, and we never had an ‘accidental’ shooting. And this was with 50% of my platoons being draftees.

I'm not a Glock fan because of the lack of a safety:

"The Glock is unique among semiautomatic pistols in that, even though it is built with three internal safeties, it is the simplest weapon to operate in a high-pressure, shoot/don't shoot scenario. In use, the only way to keep the weapon from firing is to keep your finger off the trigger. There are no external safety levers to flip or buttons that need to be pressed. The Glock is designed to be a pistol that is always ready to fire when a round is chambered, but the only possible way for it to fire is to pull the trigger.

“How does one accidentally shoot oneself with modern firearms, especially semi-automatics? Did he have the hammer back? Is there no transfer bar on that model?”

He did it reholstering. It’s about the most dangerous thing you can do with a pistol. It’s much worse than drawing from a holster because the trigger is covered when you are pulling the gun out of the holster and your finger goes naturally to the frame of the gun as it comes out. But the trigger is not covered when reholstering.

In his case, it sounds like his shirt got caught in the trigger guard when he was pushing the gun into the holster. It’s easy to do if you aren’t going slowly and using your eyes to reholster.

Actually, no, Mr. Police Chief, it can't happen to anyone. It takes a particular type of person to take a gun into their hands and not check to see if it was loaded, to not unload the gun before handling it in an unsafe manner, to place something in front of the muzzle that he or she does not intend to destroy and to place one’s finger on a trigger when pointing the gun at anything other than the intended target.

In fact, it takes a particular kind of hubris to ignore every one of those rules, shoot yourself like an idiot, then state it could happen to anyone to mitigate the monumental stupidity that you've displayed for the second time.

Oh, and if there is any sanity in the world, reasonable gun owners in the area will avoid a gunshop that has the carelessness to let a loaded firearm into the hands of a customer.

I have worked with THOUSANDS of neophytes ... kids that have never touched a weapon before in their lives, just a glance from me and they would check to see if they were indeed clear / empty.

Not even one accidental discharge! And in my 28 years combined again not even one accidental discharge in any Unit / Command that I have served.

TT

I’ve never been in a gun store where the guns in the display case are loaded.

I do own some wheel guns, I now carry an old 380 AMT backup in DAO. No problem clearing the chamber and very small. The 1911 is used for the shooting range now. One vision of disaster was enough for me.

I see that the DM illustrated the Glock story with a Beretta picture.

"If the firearm is handled properly, it will not happen."

Rarely, but sometimes, there is a mechanical failure. There are 3 safeties on a Glock, but there's a very, very, very remote chance that the discharge wasn't from operator error.

The safety on a GLock is on the trigger.

Glock, have a Glock specific holster, nothing else will do.

Re-holstering a Glock with one in the pipe, always with extreme caution and very deliberate.
