Police Chief David Counceller's 40-caliber Glock handgun accidentally discharged last Saturday while he was at Wulff's gun shop examining a handgun similar to the one he carries - he shot himself in the leg.
Counceller, 60, who was off duty at the time, said: 'I need to pay more attention. I know what the dangers are. It was pure carelessness on my part.'

But he said he sees the accident as an opportunity in his run ahead of May's primary. He said: 'If anyone says this could never happen to them, they’re mistaken.'
'You have to keep your guard up at all times. Some candidates are out there doing things for kids to try to get elected. 'Me, I shoot myself. What a way to get publicity.'

I see, did it accidentally pull it's own trigger? It happened twice? I would call that ignorance, stupidity, negligence and downright incompetence. He is perfect for the job. (Not)
What always gets Me is the number of times I've see store Staff get a firearm from the case and not even check to make sure it is clear before waving it past somebody on the way to handing it over to a customer.
I've hit the floor more than once! Got up and walked out and never went back.

Glock is a no nonsense weapon..if you like to handle...fondle, and play around with a gun, this is not the weapon for you. The 3 safeties are “drop safeties’ only. To me, hand guns with so called “safeties” only encourage careless handling of a gun. I swear..i’ve seen it so many times...someone will put the “safety” on..and the first thing they do , is pull the trigger.
Unless it was an indoor range I simply can’t remember seeing a loaded gun in a gun shop.

Dittos. I’m a big believer in things that are simple and effective.
They say there are two kinds of pilots... Those that have landed wheels up, and those that haven’t— yet.
It has always been my belief that the first step to making a really bad mistake is to think I’m incapable of it.
It’s something that those of us that have been handling firearms for decades need to be especially aware of. IMHO. Forty or fifty years of properly handling firearms does leave us with certain excellent and ingrained habits. But that’s exactly when we get sloppy. I think it’s just essential that we keep in mind that ANY of us can fail... We’re just sure that chamber is empty. We were careful.
That’s why there is more than one rule:
- all guns are always loaded.
- never let the muzzle cover anything you aren’t willing to destroy.
- keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire.
- be sure of your target. And what’s behind it.
The good news is... You have to violate not just one but ALL of the rules to hurt somebody.
Really lucky.
His problem most likely can be boiled down to this: Familiarity breeds contempt. He is guilty of contempt of firearm and was shot for it.
The pertinent question is this: what the hell was your finger doing on the trigger, you moron?

DUH!!! could you call that an understatement?
Knock on whould{sic} BUT have been owning/handling weapons for 60 some years and don’t ever recall anything in my control firing unless I had my finger on the trigger.
Never had a SUV start or get in an accident by itself either.
Must not be living ‘right’.
The onliest time you hand a loaded hand gun to one is if she/he thinks it is a hair dryer.<: <:
All that said... There certainly seem to be a lot of these stories with Glocks. I’m not a big Glock fan. I own one, but it’s way in the back of the safe and I haven’t had it out in quite a while. It never blew my skirt up anyway.
The lack of safeties doesn’t bother me. My favorite carry gun is a Sig, and it doesn’t have a safety either. My 1911s have safeties but I don’t use them. So. I don’t think this is a safety switch issue.
Ditto, 35+ years with firearms, no ND. I too have a G19, never had an issue. When properly maintained Glocks do not fire unless and until someone pulls the trigger.
With an older 1911, rack the slide, finger off trigger, grip safety obviously disengaged, and release slide just before cocked position. The gun will go bang.
Simple.
Pull your trigger finger off the frame and place it inside the trigger guard.
