Netflix has “Gung Ho!” on DVD and instant download. I have little to add to Bosley Crowther’s review except that the realism of the combat portrayed falls short by later standards. Marines and Japanese shot or blown up drift quietly off to sleep with no visible wounds.

"Bela Lugosi left today for Oklahoma City to join the Arsenic and Old Lace road company. He will relieve Boris Karloff ..."

I see "Bob Mitchum" is in Gung Ho.

Boris Karloff was stuck in the show contract so he wasn’t in the movie.

Too bad. The jokes about how the surgery went badly after “that movie” would have worked better.

I was surprised to see such big movie names in the road company of a play, and in Oklahoma City in January, too. *brrr*

Well a gig is a gig.

Boris has to cash in while he can. In ten years he is Frankenstein’s monster again but this time reduced to a comic figure playing against Abbott and Costello.

nothing was like the real thing ................................. There is a book called “American Samurai”, about the Japanese Americans fighting in the Pacific. It covered the raid, it appears we weren’t very nice there. It was so bad, it encouraged the Japanese to fight to the death. WW II movies were mostly political propaganda, pretty much like today. Objective Burma with Errol Flynn was probably my favorite of the group.

That wasn’t Boris in the A&C movie. It was Glenn Strange, I think.
Unless that was Boris under a different stage name, but I read somewhere years ago that he didn’t like them playing the character for laughs and so didn’t participate.

Cheers,
Jim
