‘Alarming’ Flu Epidemic Escalates, Cedars Sinai Has Visitors Wear Surgical Masks To Slow Spread

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — In an effort to help stop the spread of Southern California’s flu epidemic, one local hospital is asking all visitors to wear surgical masks while in the building.

The effects of the flu on the Southland appear to be worsening each day, with nearly 100 confirmed influenza-related deaths, and dozens more expected by the end of the week.

By this time exactly one year ago, the number of confirmed flu-related deaths was nine.

In hopes of limiting the spread of the flu, Cedars Sinai Medical Center is handing out surgical masks to all visitors, whether symptoms appear to be present or not, as part of their flu-prevention protocol.

The masks have not been an active part of the Cedars Sinai protocol since 2009.

“We’re seeing a very severe flu season,” director of epidemiology Dr. Rekha Murthy said. “It has hit hard, hit early. We are seeing what we typically haven’t seen since the H1N1 epidemic.”

According to Dr. Murthy, Cedars Sinai alone has seen 30 to 35 cases of the flu per week since December. Many of the patients being hospitalized are, surprisingly, reported to be young and middle-aged adults.

“I think what has concerned us is the severity of illness, more so than the numbers, and the types of people that this is occurring in,” Dr. Murthy said. “Otherwise-generally healthy people and younger people, that is really alarming.”

While doctors suggest that routine hygienic habits, such as washing your hands and using sanitizer are recommended steps to take in flu prevention, the best step you can take is a vaccination.

Dr. Murthy says it is still not too late to get your shot.

“It takes about two weeks for the immunity to build, and it looks like the flu is going to be around for a while.”

To be fair:

Everyone is contagious before they know they have the flu, and for a few days after they feel they are well enough to go back to school. Therefore it will spread like wildfire.

What I did with one child was when I saw the rest of the family catching it, I took him, perfectly healthy, out of,school.. And didn’t send him back til 5 days after he started to seem well. Not many would do that. But I also sent, one child to a class and he got others sick, even though he didn’t come down with it til the next day. You can’t be perfect.

A crock of crap! The vaccines are not live virus or in most cases even a whole virus. The vaccines make use of the antigenic proteins to stimulate body defenses against the particular strain or strains of the virus. This is nothing but reverting to medieval ideas of Jews poisoning the wells and bad humors causing and spreading disease.

My wife’s sister-in-law came down with the flu just after Christmas, went home from the hospital and first got better, then developed pneumonia as a result of the flu weakening her immune system. Went back in the hospital, her brain swelled because of the pneumonia and she was put into a coma along with kidney dialyis to keep her from dying. Did no good, too far along and she died after 3 weeks from diagnosis to death from blood clots as a byproduct of the pneumonia infection. She was in excellent health with no other problems at 57 years of age. The key thing missing...she didn’t get a flu shot this year.

I’ve been getting the shots since 1970 in the military and every year thereafter. Never had even a minor flu problem.

Various strains of the flu are worse than others and different strains affect different age groups. The largest portion of military deaths from flu in the epidemic of 1918-19 were young people. The military in this country has never since experienced a flu epidemic like that since yearly shots were initiated and the military is still one of the large groups along with school children that are potential breeding grounds for the flu.

Get your shots regularly and the chances of epidemics or you yourself coming down with a serious case fall almost to zero. There are still some who come down with the flu or a flu-like infection but the numbers are very low overall.

That stupid lie about vaccinations spreading the flu are as old and as much BS as flourides in water.

This is a bad flu. Seven members of our family had it within three days of each other. We were sick as dogs for a week each. Two weeks later we still cough a bit.....

Same thing happened and is happening to me. I didn't go to the doctor, but I was starting to worry about this extended cough even though it improves a little each day. Nice to hear it is part of the symptoms.

You two want to be on allopurinol. Don’t risk another attack. Colchicine stops an attack but is hard to get now. Been there, done that with all the supplements that work until they don’t.

Well that’s the big thing. When the flu kills, it tends to kill the elderly and the very young.

100 killed from the flu though, isn’t by itself a large number in a city the size of LA...especially if there hasn’t been an epidemic in a few years, and the elderly population has built up without having something else finish them off...which death for whichever cause is nonetheless a tragedy for the particular families.

What I’ve “learned” from the comments in this thread is that the flu is caused by flu shots and by ear wax.

Who knew?

Assuming the vaccine is made properly, you are quite correct in saying the vaccine can’t give you the flu. On the other hand, some people will experience flu-like symptoms as their body gears up to fight the material injected as the vaccine...since most symptoms are not from the flu itself, but rather your body’s defense mechanisms trying to wash the organism out, or create unsuitable conditions for replication. I suspect this is at least part of what keeps this story going.

i don’t like vaccines...don’t trust them. But my wife was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in September so I got one because I didn’t want to take the chance of getting her sick. Found out from my Dr. later that getting the flu vaccine doesn’t do anything to help me stop spreading flu germs to my wife.

What about peroxide as a throat gargle and also to spray up the nostrils too?
I do this when a sore throat begins indicating infection has occurred. It either stops it or reduces its intensity. Handwashing is good but does nothing to stop airborne infected droplets.

In October when our son was in ICU for three weeks, there was a 22 year old young woman admitted to the hospital on a Monday, I think. She had had flu symptoms the prior weekend and had visited urgent care. By Monday, her family took her to the ER. By Friday, all of her major organs had shut down. They moved her to the unit where our son was. I am not sure why since she had a communicable illness. However, I don’t know if they had figured out what was the cause at that time. Friday afternoon, we were awaiting news from our son’s surgery when a group of physicians met with the girl’s family and told them she either had to be transported to a hospital four hours away or she would die. They gave her a 5% chance of surviving the move to the other location. The family finally gave consent to fly the girl by plane to the other hospital. She did survive. So on October 18, she had almost no chance at survival. She was put into a special room/unit at the second hospital. She was in a coma for a month. She came home at the end of December/first week of January. Her feet and fingertips had to be amputated. The diagnosis for all of this was the Influenza A. When our son was in the rehab hospital, they gave him the flu shot. The day he was leaving rehab, they tried to give it to him again.

The room where they had put the girl was scrubbed top to bottom after she was gone. They burned everything that was removable.

My wife and I both use the bing cherries

,

Her nephew is a doctor and he recommended them for everyday use . I'd already used them as a home remedy ,when I had a flair up.

There ya go. I pay $4 at Walmart. Both my brother and I take it. We were disabled two or three times a year previously; not a single attack since.

Why bother having flare-ups when you can take a real uricosuric and make them a thing of the past?

Because its not a grantee that it won't come back ,the cherries work they have a natural enzyme that works.
